'The Little Mermaid' Director Explains The Real Reasons Why Scuttle Was Changed From Seagull to Gannet

Earlier this week, fans started to notice once again that Scuttle wasn’t a seagull in the upcoming live action version of The Little Mermaid.

While it’s been touched on in previous interviews, there hasn’t been a full explaination for the change until now.

Director Rob Marshall opened up in a new interview with IndieWire about turning Scuttle into a Northern Gannet, which is able to dive underwater and stay there for some time.

Halle Bailey & Melissa McCarthy Are Joined By Director Rob Marshall For The Australian Premiere of 'The Little Mermaid'

Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy are joined by director Rob Marshall as they walk the red carpet for the Australian premiere of The Little Mermaid on Monday (May 22) in Sydney, Australia.

The 23-year-old singer/actress stars as Ariel in the live-action movie while the 52-year-old actress stars as Ursula.

Director Rob Marshall gave his thoughts on how the media responded to Halle Bailey being cast as Ariel.

“I didn’t think that it was a big deal, casting a woman of color,” Rob said.

First 'The Little Mermaid' Reactions from Critics Revealed After L.A. World Premiere, Plus See Red Carpet Photos!

The world premiere of Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action remake just took place and the first reactions from critics have been revealed.

Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy walked the red carpet for the event on Monday night (May 8) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

They were joined by co-stars Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Javier Bardem, Noma Dumezweni and Art Malik, as well as director Rob Marshall and original Ariel actress Jodi Benson, among others.

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden from interacting with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The movie will be released in theaters on May 26.

'The Little Mermaid' Director Explains Why He Picked Halle Bailey to Play Ariel, Says There Was 'No Agenda'

Rob Marshall, the director of the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid movie remake, is opening up about his decision to cast Halle Bailey as Ariel.

The director says there was “no agenda” behind her casting and he also responded to the moving videos of young Black children reacting to seeing a Black Ariel in the teaser trailer.

Melissa McCarthy Might Play Ursula in Live-Action 'Little Mermaid'

Melissa McCarthy is in talks to portray Ursula in Disney’s upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid film!

The 48-year-old Life of the Party actress would take on the role of the famous villain and put her own spin on the classic “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” Variety reports.

Disney reportedly wants to cast “contemporary and compelling” actors, while still honoring the original 1989 animated movie.

Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall will helm the adaptation, which will include the original songs as well as new ones from Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Lin-Manuel is also producing with Rob, John DeLuca, and Marc Platt.

Disney’s live-action The Lion King is also set to premiere soon, on July 19. Watch the trailer!

Mahershala Ali, Glenn Close, and Viggo Mortensen team up for the 2019 AARP The Magazine’s Movies For Grownups Awards!

The 44-year-old True Detective actor, the 71-year-old The Wife actress, and the 60-year-old Green Book star stepped out for the event held at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel on Monday (February 4) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Glenn is nominated for Best Actress, and Viggo is up for Best Actor for their aforementioned films.

They were joined by Best Director/Best Screenwriter nominee Peter Farrelly for Green Book, Best Director nominee Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman, Best Supporting Actor nominee Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and Best Supporting Actress nominee Blythe Danner for What They Had.

Also in attendance were Topher Grace, Barry Jenkins, Jane Seymour, Elizabeth Chomko, Linda Cardellini, Bo Welch, Catherine O’Hara, John DeLuca, Rob Marshall, Henry Mortensen, Edward James Olmos, Diane Warren, and Frances Fisher.

The event, hosted by Martin Short, honors films by and for people 50 or older. It will be televised on PBS on February 15 at 9 p.m. (check local listings) and will stream starting February 16 on pbs.org/gperf.

Sophia Loren Makes Rare Public Appearance to Host Reception for 'Mary Poppins Returns'

Sophia Loren poses for a photo with director Rob Marshall at a reception for the Disney musical Mary Poppins Returns on Friday (January 11) at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The legendary actress made a rare public appearance to support the film. She worked with Rob on the movie musical Nine back in 2009.

Also in attendance at the event were Sophia‘s son Edoardo Ponti, songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and actor Jon Voight.

Mary Poppins Returns was nominated for four Golden Globes and it’s up for nine Critics’ Choice Awards this weekend.
