Let's face it, not all throwback beauty advice can stand the test of time. Since the days of our grandmothers and mothers, we've left quite a few wacky beauty tricks and outdated tips in yesteryear where they belong.
Yet when it comes to these almost 65-year-old recommendations discovered in our archives, we're not as ready to make them a thing of the past. Sure, the language might err on the side of "old-school," but we're willing to let that slide for suggestions this good.
1. Of course you want a bright, fresh complexion; but have you tried various cleansing methods, so that you know the one you follow is best for you? Choose among soaps, creams, liquids, and combinations of these. You may change about to fit the time, the occasion, the state of your skin.
2. When you wash, are you particular about rinsing off every trace of soap? Carelessness in this respect will dry out or coarsen a delicate pelt.
3. When you clean with cream, do you apply it twice — the first time to take off most of the soil, the second to do a really thorough job?
4. Do you make sure your hands are clean before you work on your face? Do you shun the habit of picking at or fingering your face? Hands make all sort of strange contacts, and broken skin picks up infection regularly.
5. When you cleanse, do you give special attention to your hairline and the crevices around your mouth and nose? Neglect here will soon show.
6. Do you use a rich cream to counteract the least sign of flakiness or dryness? A well-creamed skin looks clearer and younger than a dry one.
7. Do you admit that the lines and puckers you see on other faces can appear on yours? Rubbing cream on your forehead, around your eyes and mouth, in front of your ears, will help ward off these age giveaways.
8. Do you make use of cold water and clear skin lotions to tone and liven your skin and encourage circulation. They feel good, too.
9. Do you drink enough water — six to eight glasses of liquid a day?
10. Do you avoid frowns, grimaces, and other mannerisms that etch ugly patterns on your face? Once there, the lines are almost impossible to erase.
11. Do you stop, think, and act at the first sight of blackheads? They may be the result of poor skin care or, more likely, unbalanced meals. So now will you eat your carrots and watercress? Greens, salads, and yellow fruits and vegetables are good for your skin.
12. Do you give your face special protection from cold and wind? The creamy tinted makeup base that gives you pretty color also helps save your skin. A hint of cold cream or a film of hand lotion under your powder base is a fine safeguard, as well.
13. Do you know the best way to slick on cream, and do you always follow it? Up and out is the general direction; use a swirling movement across lines. Under the eyes, stroke from the outside toward the nose.
14. Do you conscientiously follow a regular system of complexion care day by day? Begin early, look ahead, take time now to prevent faults and flaws you will regret so much in years to come.
