Here's the thing. This issue may have been caused by the recent iTunes update, but I tested this on ML (10.8.5), installing the latest iTunes update. I did confirm that "Find my Mac" was turned off, and after turning it back on, restarting and repairing permissions, the Users folder was left untouched and was not hidden.

If the same behavior does not occur on ML, then it must be something with Mavericks, because if it was really, fully iTunes that caused the hiding of the Users folder (when FMM also is turned on), then it would happen, irregardless of which OS was installed.

Nothing happens/becomes hidden in ML. Reports are only about Mavericks. Therefore, something's wrong with Mavericks (10.9.2 and 10.9.3, presumably).

I really can't understand how this happened....Apple has some of the brightest minds in the world working for them. They had both the usual developer betas (lots for the 10.9.3 release) and this time even public betas....none of which exhibited this "bug/feature".

Why in god's name would they change something in the code drastically enough to let something like this creep into the actual release when it never appeared as a beta issue? THAT is not the way to run a beta program.

I'm appalled how this manage to go unnoticed. It's completely inexcusable.

This doesn't appear to be correct either; I just installed 10.9.3 - and nothing else - and Users disappeared.

Edit: See my next post for some more detail and a possible explanation.

CMD and r from reboot and reinstall because they will provide u full installation w/o losing ur files and u can go to terminal to enable it.... Seriously I think people are thinking way too much...

Keep drinking that kook aid and trying reinstalling from CMD and r from reboot and tell if what u said is correct... I followed this one guy advice and it worked

that article is stupid...i just FIXED my issue by REINSTALLING...from cmd R during reboot...so what is he talking about?

is it hard to reinstall and permanently fix it?

Reinstalling does not fix it (yes, I tried it). You will have the problem as soon as you install iTunes 11.2 and enable "Find My Mac" and then restart again.

The update should have been tested. The updated shouldn't screw things up.

And a reinstall?! Why should an update inconvenience users? This shouldn't have happened.

I totally feel u but I did it and it worked.... What I noticed about reinstalling is that (via internet) it downloaded additional files and I didn't lost any files ... It just install over your current version.

I don't know about your computer but I just reinstalled it via internet using CMD r and it replaced the current osx and it downloaded some additional files maybe combo not sure but I tried twice and restarted 4 times and I had to enable the files and it was there... Bam no more problems...

I'll just wait for them to fix it. I'm not reinstalling my OS.

Luckily I only installed the updates on my iMac. I'll hold off installing on my MacBook until Apple fix this mess. I hope that fix is coming today and not next week after the development wombles have spent the weekend patting themselves on the back for a job well done.

iMovie import

Here's a screen shot of iMovie import when /Users is hidden. Notice the spinning icon under Favorites. I proved its a bug by doing a chflags for /Users and it works fine when unhidden. Sure hope apple reads my feedback and gets this fixed. Who know what other apps will be affected.

An update just popped up for me. iTunes 11.2.1 in the App Store. When it was done installing it had a little pop up about iPhoto Library. Now the User folder is showing up again.

Breaks Final Cut Pro / File > Import Media

I was at an Apple Store today for a one-to-one learning how to best use Final Cut Pro X. The person wanted me to use File > Import Media and it would not work (appears to just hang) with the /Users folder missing. She tried to convince me something must have gone wrong with the installation of 10.9.3. Not clear if it's that or iTunes 11.2 (others noted in this forum it could be either).

The "sudo chflags nohidden /Users" work-around does get Final Cut's media import functioning again.

Clear it's a bug, and it breaks one of their "Pro" applications. Hopefully they'll get it fixed.

Just posted something about Final Cut being broken. Looks like both iMovie and Final Cut were affected in the same way.

interesting thing - when I ran the update on my MacBook Pro through the 'App Store' the disappearing user directory occurred however on my iMac I applied the Combo update then installed iTunes 11.2 via the AppStore and the problem didn't appear. Oh and interesting enough just as a typed this Apple has released iTunes 11.2.1 - I'll give that a go.

I guess you didn't see the other threads about this being an iTunes 11.2 bug. Apple has released iTunes 11.2.1 to resolve it.

No, I didn't see the other threads. The 10.9.3 and iTunes 11.2.1 updates appeared this morning and I checked the forum before applying them, only searching for 10.9.3. I took that screen shot before, and now that I've applied them, the Users folder is back. It sounded like people were claiming the 10.9.3 update caused the folder to be hidden, but now I see that wasn't true. It was already hidden in 10.9.2.
Did you update iTunes?
I have now. Problem solved.

Yep, grabbed the iTunes v 11.2.1 late Friday night (5/16/14) when it showed up, didn't even think twice about installing since credible sources pointed the finger at iTunes and not OS X as the bug source.

The update resolved the hidden Users & Users/Shared folder issue.
