Tasks Is a Near-Perfect Astrid Clone, Perfect for Your To-Do List

Android: Tasks, or more correctly, Tasks: Astrid To-Do List Clone, is essentially what the name implies—a clone based on Astrid's old open source that aims to bring the functionality of our beloved lost to-do app back to anyone who misses it, or wants something better than what's left behind.

In case you didn't know, before Astrid was picked up (and summarily executed) by Yahoo, it was a free (and freemium) and open source project. The code is still available at GitHub for any enterprising developers. Reader Alex decided to take things into his own hands, forked the code, and built his own Android to-do list using it. The result is a great to-do app that captures a lot of the great features of its inspiration.

Some of Astrid's best features are there—color-coded priorities, multiple categories, smart recurring tasks, reminders and notifications, and that clean, uncluttered layout. You even get day and night themes. However, the app is missing a few things—for example, there's no syncing across devices—Tasks is local-only (there's no webapp), although you can easily import and export to-dos. You can't share or assign to-dos to other people, either. Still, if you manage your to-dos mostly from your Android phone or tablet and don't need access on another device, its worth a look—especially if you were an Astrid user who's still adjusting to life without it.
