YES! So excited Fantagraphics is publishing this book. What this book lacks in mutilated cats suspended in formaldehyde, it more than makes up for in department store conflagrations and demented architectural wonderlands. This book sprawls a lot more than Like a Sniper Lining up his Shot, which is understandable, since it’s an earlier work in Manchette’s oeuvre, written before his style had reached its emotionally spartan pinnacle on display in Sniper. Whereas Sniper illustrates its hero’s total failure to better his life with brutal efficiency and masterfully tight timing, Run stretches out a little bit in order to take a wider look at how madness seeps out of the social landscape into everything from high art to extreme violence. It gives up its relentless, almost claustrophobic focus on a single anti-hero, instead juggling a handful of main characters. These are people struggling to engage with the world in a way that they can manage, even taking some shocking steps to get there - but unlike Sniper, some of them actually succeed in this book, even if they don’t make it to the end with all their limbs. It’s not as dark as what we’ve already seen in West Coast Blues and Sniper, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a brilliant noir that is easily one of the best Tardi books I have read.
