Patrick Dempsey, it's plain to see, would rather be racing than acting. So how do you get him behind a camera? Let him make a TV show... about racing! And that, according to reports, is precisely what the actor is working on.
The idea is to do a show about F1 racing based on The Limit, a book by Michael Cannell that profiled Phil Hill and his run up to the 1961 Formula One World Championship. Dempsey, best known for his portrayal of Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd in Grey's Anatomy would ostensibly play Hill, or at least a character based closely on him. Other characters would include Hill's Ferrari teammate (and chief rival) Count Wolfgang von Trips, and the dearly departed pioneering racing journalist Denise McCluggage.
The '61 season was characterized by a bitter and closely-fought rivalry that climaxed in a devastating crash, setting up a story line similar to the 1976 showdown between James Hunt and Niki Lauda depicted in the smash hit Rush. And if that film's success is anything to go by, the television adaptation of The Limit could be just the show we've been waiting for. Especially with Dempsey involved, invoking the racing/acting spirit embodied in the past by the likes of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman.
Then again, this isn't the first time we've heard of The Limit being optioned for a screen adaptation. Back in 2009, Tobey Maguire was linked to a movie project that would have done the same on the big screen. Here's hoping one of the two projects actually makes it to a screen of one size or another in the near future.
