1967 Miss U Sylvia Hitchcock, 69

Celso de Guzman Caparas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In Memoriam: 1967 Miss Universe Sylvia Hitchcock (top), whose married surname is Carson, lost her battle with cancer last Sunday, Aug. 16, in Florida, USA. She was 69.

Sylvia was Miss Alabama and Miss USA before competing in the Miss Universe pageant on July 15, 1967, the fourth American to win the crown. Pilar Pilapil represented the Philippines in that pageant.

Sylvia is fondly remembered by Filipino fans. In 1974 when the Miss U pageant was held here for the first time (at the Folk Arts Theater), Sylvia was among the title-holders invited (shown below, second from right; with, from left, 1973 Miss U Margie Moran, 1952 Miss U Armi Kuusela-Hilario and 1969 Miss U Gloria Diaz).
