What is EGCG Green Tea Extract?

EGCG Green Tea Extract

As you may already know, green tea has powerful antioxidative properties. Those antioxidative properties come from ingredients called catechins, also known as green tea catechins or GTC.

There are four major catechins in green tea, including:

— Epicatechin (EC)
— Epigallocatechin (EGC)
— Epicatechin gallate (ECG)
— Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)

Green tea contains more EGCG than any other catechin. Approximately 40% of the catechins in green tea are EGCG catechins.

Today, nutritional supplement manufacturers have isolated EGCG from the rest of the ingredients in green tea. This allows them to sell EGCG supplements. You take these supplements daily to deliver high doses of EGCG directly into your body, where the EGCG immediately goes to work delivering powerful benefits – like fat loss.

What Are the Benefits of EGCG Green Tea Extract?

Green tea has long been known to boost metabolism and kickstart your body’s natural weight loss properties. For years, green tea has been used in weight loss formulas and diet pills, where it’s prized for its caffeine content, flavonoids, and catechins.

Together, these three active ingredients lead to powerful benefits. But recent studies have shown that the flavonoids and caffeine only play a minor role compared to the primary green tea catechin, EGCG.

Here are some of the benefits scientists have observed about EGCG:

— Fat Loss
— Higher Metabolism
Antioxidant Effects
— Improve The Function Of Insulin
— Boost Prostate, Immune, And Gut Health
— Treat Cancer

Scientific Studies on EGCG

One study on EGCG lasted for 12 weeks and studied the weight loss benefits of combining EGCG with caffeine. The end result was that participants lost an average of 7.7 pounds of weight over a 12 week period.

In another study, participants were able to burn “up to 200 calories” per day more than a control group that took a placebo.

But people take EGCG for more than just weight loss benefits. Another study published in Phytochemistry in 2006 indicated that green tea – and more specifically, EGCG-rich dietary supplements – could “potently and specifically” inhibit certain diseases and illnesses in the body and lead to powerful overall health benefits.

One study on the cardiovascular benefits of EGCG was published in the Journal of the American College of nutrition in August 2007. That study was titled, “Effects of green tea and EGCG on cardiovascular and metabolic health.” That study examined “dose-response relationships in several epidemiological studies” and found that EGCG usage was associated with better cardiovascular health.

Specifically, those who drank 5, 6, or more cups of green tea per day or consumed 200 to 300mg of EGCG were observed to have better cardiovascular health than those who do not.

Perhaps one of the most encouraging studies on EGCG green tea extract was its use as a cancer treatment. Researchers observed that people in countries with regular green tea consumption – like Japan – have low rates of cancer. In an effort to explain this connection, researchers looked at the role catechins might play in cancer prevention.

After extensive study, researchers concluded that:

“The use of EGCG could enhance the effect of conventional cancer therapies through additive or synergistic effects as well as through amelioration of deleterious side effects. Further research, especially at the clinical level, is needed to ascertain the potential role of EGCG as adjuvant in cancer therapy.”

So early studies showed that EGCG could potentially be a powerful cancer treatment – although more research is required before a definitive connection can be proven.

How to Buy EGCG Green Tea Extract

As mentioned above, 40% of the catechins in green tea are EGCG catechins. That’s why green tea is one of the best sources for EGCG. You can buy green tea at any supermarket or at many retail websites online.

But some people don’t like the taste of green tea, or find tea inconvenient to drink. That’s why more and more health supplement manufacturers are making EGCG green tea extract supplements.

These supplements have extracted catechins from dried green tea and then reduced those catechins into purified EGCG. The end result is a high dose of pure EGCG with no filler ingredients: just take one or two capsules per day to enjoy the health benefits mentioned above.

Typically, EGCG supplements are priced between $10 and $20 for a month’s supply.

One EGCG supplement made by Now comes in the form of 400mg capsules. There are 200mg of EGCG in each capsule and the supplement contains 80% catechins overall to “support cellular health.” You take one capsule daily with a meal. Each capsule contains the equivalent catechins of about 2 to 3 cups of green tea.

Who Should Use EGCG Green Tea Extract?

Green tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world behind only water. It’s been used for millennia for its powerful health benefits. But in recent years, modern science has shown us that green tea’s health benefits can often be isolated down to one single ingredient: EGCG.

EGCG is a unique catechin that can encourage weight loss, better cardiovascular health, and disease prevention. If you want to enjoy the benefits of green tea without actually drinking green tea, then you may want to consider buying an EGCG green tea extract health supplement.
