Wet, white storm slogs through Northeast

Road crews work on clearing a flooded road in Norwalk Conn., using snowplows to clear the more than foot deep water, Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014.

A winter storm lashed the Northeast with snow, wind and rain Tuesday, leading to wet roads and hundreds of flight delays from Boston to Washington, D.C., as the system slowly slogs across the region through Thursday.

More than 800 flights have been canceled and more than 2,000 delayed so far Tuesday, FlightAware reported. Dozens of delays occurred at airports such as LaGuardia, Newark and Philadelphia.

In southern New England, state police responded to dozens of crashes and spinouts on icy roads. In New Hampshire, hundreds of schools were closed.

The heaviest snow is forecast to target the mountains of the interior Northeast and northern New England, where 6 to 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts, AccuWeather predicts. Some higher elevations could get 2 feet of snow through Thursday.

A winter storm warning is in effect for much of New York state and northern New England.

"Travel conditions will become difficult due to snow-covered roads and visibilities will drop sharply in the heavy snow," the weather service said in its winter storm warning for Vermont. "The weight of the snow and sleet may also lead to possible power outages."

The playground at Chambersburg Memorial Park, Chambersburg, Pa., is encased in ice Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, following an overnight storm.

The storm will be a mainly rain event for the I-95 corridor from Boston southward to Washington, D.C.

Dallas also had extensive delays due to a thick layer of fog that settled over the city earlier today.

Coastal flooding is also a concern from the Delaware and New Jersey beaches to the eastern New England coast as howling northeasterly winds whip the region, AccuWeather reports.

The storm caused widespread coastal flooding and soaked the Jersey Shore area Tuesday, flooding roads and resulting in water rescues.

The Weather Channel has named the storm Winter Storm Damon.

In the West, another storm is poised to deliver California a punishing blow of rain and wind from Wednesday through Friday. The National Weather Service said that this storm is "expected to be one of the strongest storms in terms of wind and rain intensity" since storms in October 2009 and January 2008.

The storm will continue to pelt the Northeast and New England with rain and snow on Wednesday.
