Plex video streaming app finally available for PlayStation users in North America

More than a month after it was announced, the Plex video streaming application is now available to download from the PlayStation Store. The app is available for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 only, and there are no plans to support PlayStation Vita or PlayStation TV.

Plex allows users to maintain their own personal collection of video files on a home server and stream that video to multiple devices in their home. The service also features the ability to grant access to your video collection to friends and family outside the home. The PlayStation app joins apps currently available on Xbox One, Android, Mac and Windows PC platforms as well as devices like Chromecast, Fire TV, Roku and Vizio smart TVs.

"Plex for PlayStation is currently available for free to Plex Pass subscribers," the US PlayStation blog wrote today, referring to the existing Plex subscription service. "In the future, it will be made available, for a fee, to those without a Plex Pass."

Today Polygon was been able to find Plex through the PlayStation Store, under the Apps category. Plex was not available directly from the video tab on the PlayStation dashboard. We've confirmed that the application allows for a quick connection to an existing home server, shared servers outside the home, and will successfully play multiple video codecs.
