USC Player Spotlight: Jimmy Gunn

GUNN

With a public memorial for USC defensive end Jimmy Gunn this morning at 10:30 in the Founders Room at the Galen Center, it’s a good time to remember his accomplishments. Gunn was an All-American in 1969 and part of the famed “Wild Bunch” defensive line named after the classic Western movie directed by Sam Peckinpah that was also released in 1969. He played on USC’s 1967 national champion team and in three Rose Bowls.

Gunn, who died last month of heart failure at age 66, played in the NFL for seven years (1970-76) with the Chicago Bears, New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Wild Bunch defensive line: Al Cowlings, Jimmy Gunn, Bubba Scott, Charles Weaver and Tody Smith.

  1. Hey Wolf, are you going to be there at the Memorial today? I will look for you if that is the case.

  2. Jimmy was a real class act. He gave 110 % on every play from the defensive end position. A quiet guy who let his actions speak volume on the field.

  3. Attended the Memorial service today. The Athletic Dept. didn’t have a single soul there. It was a pathetic show of the Trojan family with only myself, a friend, and one trustee of Caucasian ethnicity. Hardly any football players who played with Gunn showed up except for Sam Cunningham, Bill Holland, and one other gentleman. Not a coach on the current staff. An excellent video was shown along with
some good speeches from family and friends.
