Final Fantasy XIII Retrospective Review

Final Fantasy XIII might be the most hated Final Fantasy game in a long time. However Final Fantasy XIII does have a few good ideas and fantastic game play.

In this retrospective review Ryatta looks at the game with the whole Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Saga in mind as well as the localisation changes that were made and highly unnecessary.

Despite a lot of hate XIII got, I really loved it. The story and narrative were amazing, the development of characters throughout the story was really well written. The combat was fast paced, and many fights actually had some difficulty to them. The only complaint I could have is that it was going from point A to point B the whole time. Although whereas I loved XIII, I absolutely despised the sequels, which were just milking XIII, just like X-2 ruined X.

Entonations3495d ago

The characters were written enough, but the voice acting really took me out of it. I really want to play through it again in Japanese because the english voice acting made the game seem like a parody of itself. It lacked agency, and so I really couldn't feel for the characters.

I'm writing a review on xiii currently also. And a blog focusing on its soundtrack and why I feel its a chipped gem of a game that deserves more credit! Its not the best game ever or even a top 5 Ff title... bit its still enjoyable and a solid 8/10. Its villain was poor and it lacked a proper narrative which had you absolutely hooked, but it had loads of positives. I'll post up my review on N4G soon. And blog, for those interested :)

- Story had the potential to be good. I like the setting of Gran Pulse or Cocoon and the myth of Fal'cie (it reminds me a bit of Espher from FF VI). BUT that potential ruined by unmemorable characters, villains, and dialogue.

- Gameplay had the potential to be good. Input two-three-or more command in one turn is a good idea because it made the battle more fast paced. The crystarrium system that resembles a lot of Sphere Grid from FF X also still fun to manage. BUT they made a lot of unnecessary decision such as:

* Party leader death means game over
* Can't switch over to other character in battle and must rely on that unresponsive A.I (ugh!)
* No mini games
* Exploring is almost non-existant. Funnily some people tried to compare it with X but X got a lot to explore such as finding Al-bheds, secret summons, etc.

- Music had some memorable track and i loved the battle theme. But overall it really lacking compare to other main FF. Not hearing victory fanfare in the end of battle also made the experience a bit dull.

The only thing SE nailed it is graphic. Yes it's amazing but that doesn't enough to make it as memorable as other main FF, including FF XII.

Personally i gave it a 6.5-7/10. But it could be higher if it's a new IP or not a main FF.

I agreed but I disagree with some of your points. The story was great though it did take a bit too much time during Act 1 since it not only had to introduce 2 worlds and the mythos but the characters as well.

* Party leader death means game over - True but it was ultimately fixed during 13-2
* Can't switch over to other character in battle and must rely on that unresponsive A.I (ugh!) - Only certain people were unresponsive, witht the team I used I never once had a problem with responsiveness and like any FF game some of the characters were memorable while some were annoying.
* No mini games - Clearly explained in the story since they are WANTED FUGITIVES they can't really take the time to sit and play games when they are getting shot at. Also ultimately fixed with 13-2
* Exploring is almost non-existant. Funnily some people tried to compare it with X but X got a lot to explore such as finding Al-bheds, secret summons, etc. - This goes along with the fugitives, can't really explore when on the run. You do eventually get a chance and as much time as you want to explore, find secrets, do side-quests to your hearts content. Also fixed with 13-2

The game wasn't perfect but no Final Fantasy or game has been. The game was great fun when it came out and it always will be. Fast and difficult, fun, and entertaining.

"The story was great though it did take a bit too much time during Act 1 since it not only had to introduce 2 worlds and the mythos but the characters as well."

Like i said. I like the setting and it has potential to be good. But i still don't see any interesting background story for Lightning and her party that made me really care for them. Well except Sazh.

"True but it was ultimately fixed during 13-2"

We're talking 13-1 in here and if you insist on including 13-2 than i can said they messed up again in Lightning Returns.

"Only certain people were unresponsive, witht the team I used I never once had a problem with responsiveness and like any FF game some of the characters were memorable while some were annoying."

I found all of them unresponsive. When i need my party to heal me asap on the next turn but what they did is attacking the enemies.

"Clearly explained in the story since they are WANTED FUGITIVES they can't really take the time to sit and play games when they are getting shot at"

Did you ever play FF 7? The Avalanche gang, means Cloud and his party, are terrorist / wanted fugitives for blowing up Shinra's reactor. But Squaresoft still included a lot of mini-games and side quest even when Shinra's hunted down Cloud ass to the end of the world.

Did you ever play FF 9? Queen Brahme hunted down Zidane ass because he kidnapped Garnet, her daughter. But Squaresoft still indcluded a lot of mini-games and side quest when Zidane and crew travel the world.

So no. I found the reason they cut mini-games from 13 because Lightning and her party a wanted fugitives is...pardon my word: bullshit.

"This goes along with the fugitives, can't really explore when on the run. You do eventually get a chance and as much time as you want to explore, find secrets, do side-quests to your hearts content"

And i find that BS too. Also, the secrets / side quest in 13-1 is very lacking compare to other main FF.

"The game wasn't perfect but no Final Fantasy or game has been"

Agreed, no FF is perfect. But 13 is a big dissapointment compare to other main FF. Again, IF 13 is a new IP or not a main FF than i will tolerate all those flaws.

"The game was great fun when it came out and it always will be. Fast and difficult, fun, and entertaining."

Very subjective and i will not change my mind or yours. Also i agreed the battle is fast BUT difficult? No. All you did mostly is staggering the enemies and i find that repetitive and lacks of depth.

I love FF-XIII though it has its flaws,I was playing it again last night. The story is bizzare & the villain is lame, but the battle system is fun & chaotic at times, love the soundtrack & the production including graphics are top notch.I like Lightning because of her being a bad ass but the character is over exposed now due to the 2 lame sequels & even putting her in FF-XIV.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972129d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus129d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda128d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B127d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981127d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot127d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda127d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy127d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay127d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12129d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay127d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB128d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
