The Witcher game that never was

In all the hubbub at E3 surrounding The Witcher 3 - many people's game of the show - it was surprising for Eurogamer to discover that there was another Witcher game, a long time ago, that Eurogamer had no idea existed. It wasn't made by CD Projekt Red - in fact it didn't have anything to do with CD Projekt - but it was being made in Poland.

It was being made by Adrian Chmielarz, the developer best known for leading People Can Fly and Bulletstorm. Long before the PCF days he worked at another studio that he co-founded with a school friend - a studio called Metropolis. And it's here that in 1996 and 1997 - six years before developer CD Projekt Red was founded - a game called The Witcher was being made.

I am glad this did not get made or we might not have a studio like CD Projekt RED founded to make the actual The Witcher series and GOG.com

Great article.

It's a shame the game wasn't completed... Mature RPG storytelling might have evolved even faster.

What makes you think a different dev would go the same mature route as cd projekt red did. Plus we are talking 1996 and even though there was mature games then. They were a far cry to anything we consider a quality adult experiance in gaming now A days.

"It was going to be an action-adventure game, Chmielarz's Witcher, with moral choices, mature storytelling and psychologically complex characters. "The focus was on making it this 3D action-adventure that was, as we called it at the time - and again I hate to use this term because it sounds pretentious - for adults.

"I know it sounds a little cliché or funny in 2014, but in 1997 - 17 years ago - it wasn't really obvious. These things like moral choices or hard choices or slightly darker storytelling - it wasn't common. But that was the goal and it was all because of the quality of the source material - it inspired us to do something very special."

And you made that conclusion how? I would argue that games in the past were more "mature" than what we have now. The word "mature" is very fluid and lately just means politically correct. By that definition Mario is immature because is has no gay characters in it..

The Witcher is the most mature game I have played in a long time. Metro 2033 is a close second. Their story-line is "mature" and shows the passion of creativity rather than a conforming to status quo. That's real maturity.

TheFirstClassic3848d ago

It could have, but honestly I'm happy with the way things are. I wouldn't have the witcher any other way.

poppinslops3848d ago (Edited 3848d ago )

Oh, I agree... Wild hunt is by far my most anticipated game.

This earlier effort appears to have been based on Sapkowski's novels - unlike CDPRs games, whose stories are set after the books.

At the very least, this Adrian fellow coined the term 'Witcher'...
That's pretty cool.

This is a great month for me, I have almost bought Wild Hearts a ton of times and same for Cult of the Lamb.

Some really good variety here, and some serious playtime on offer here with all the RPG's. Good luck finishing all these games in a month heh.

Time Splitters is fantastic on the classic side, and glad to see they keep supporting PSVR2 with games

Really grateful I had the good sense to drop pay to play multi-player. It's a rip off.

Einhander1972246d ago

At least when you buy the basic PS+ tier you actually get new games often including AAA games.

This month PS+ got the Star Wars Skywalker Saga, Five Nights at Freddy's:: Security Breach, and Ender Lilies

Xbox hasn't gotten any new games for their basic tier since July and before that it was in August 2023. And if that wasn't bad enough the games they got were just recycled from game pass.

14 people downvoted and enjoy paying for something millions of pc gamers get for free. Lol.

seanpitt23246d ago (Edited 246d ago )

They could have included the dlc for the Witcher 3 game of the year addition geez..

How many times do they want to keep putting WD2 on

Einhander1972246d ago

PS+ 17 games this month unlike game pass which only offered 7 almost half of them I got years ago on PS+,.and the rest are indies from companies I haven't even heard of.

And the Sony Pictures movie collection will probably get updated with new movies and shows from Crunchy Roll too.

Not bad for a subscription that costs significantly less game pass even before they raised the prices.

crazyCoconuts246d ago

Still not as good as it was a year ago. I think they're walking back on the quality of games just like XBGP is. It's a good thing though...ppl gotta start buying games again.

darthv72247d ago

For me, the redeeming titles are the Time Splitters ones. Sadly i do not subscribe to premium, only extra.

VersusDMC247d ago

Well you can still buy them. PS2 titles range from 5 (the clone wars) to 20 (tomb raider legend). So it may be a good price.

Becuzisaid247d ago

I'd bet these are in the expensive side. People have been wanting some kind of timesplitters remaster for a long time now.

pwnmaster3000246d ago

I thought it was a pretty good month, then I saw time splitter. It made it so much better. I always wanted to play this game but never did

Deeeeznuuuts247d ago

Not the best month for me other than timesplitters!! Can't wait to replay them again, be nice if they have trophies too but no danger of they don't, can't wait!
