Mother Kicked Out of Restaurant After Changing Her Baby's Diaper at the Table

A restaurant in Spring, Texas kicked a mother and her children out after the mom changed her infant daughter's diaper at the table. According to KHOU 11 News, Miranda Sowers took her four-month-old to the bathroom to change their diaper but there was no changing table. Since she was with her infant, her four-year-old daughter, an her eight-year-old daughter, Sowers did not "want to take everyone back to the minivan to do the diaper change."

Sowers claims that she laid her daughter down in a chair and "quickly and quietly changed her diaper," adding that this was a "last resort" solution. An employee of the restaurant, however, disagreed and said that the process was neither quick nor quiet: "How would you feel? You're sitting there eating. I don't want to lose all these other customers because they see a dirty diaper." The restaurant brought the family's order to the table in to-go containers, and asked them to leave. Employees of Brother's Pizza Express note that they "stand behind their decision" but have considered investing in changing tables for the bathrooms.

Changing a baby's diaper in a restaurant does not usually make the news. In the past, several restaurants have asked nursing mothers to leave after they were seen breastfeeding at the table. One group of moms became so upset after a McDonald's employee asked a mother to leave after breastfeeding her son in public that they staged a protest. Another group of mothers protested after a Friendly's employee told a woman to "cover up" while breastfeeding her child.
