An interesting discussion unfolded today. Twelve top SaaS CFOs came together in the first #CFO Boardroom at SaaStock Dublin. A common theme was the desire to best lead their companies in driving both growth and profitability for their companies as they scale, the desire to have a community of peers to brainstorm with, and to build an understanding of benchmarks of what great looks like. Three insights came out of the discussion: 1. CFOs play a critical role in partnering with the CEO in the development of the business model. The CEO must often be the champion of the company, defining what success looks like for the leadership team. The CFO complements that effort by designing durable business models that capture the investments and outcomes of engaging the buyer’s journey, and the cash-flow from investments in people and infrastructure to execute those models. 2. Partnering with peer CxOs is critical to success. In defining the model, there is the collaboration with the marketing, product, sales, and people leaders on the investments to be made, and the outcomes to be forecasted. This only happens with respectful, trusted relationships built on the shared aspiration of building a great company. 3. Investor expectations are built around milestones for each stage of the journey. A good board helps guide on the expected metrics to show the results, and forecasts, of the company. The CFO needs to tell the narrative of the company’s vision, with the metrics that reinforce that story, in navigating the expectations of current and future investors. Key to that is a good tech stack that gives one version of the truth, with the trust and audit that comes from the rigor of being led by the finance or RevOps team. Last year was given a book at the Gainsight Pulse 2023 event - Customer Communities, written by Nick Mehta, CEO of Gainsight, and Robin Van Lieshout, Chief Strategy Officer. Ive finally got round to reading it - within a few pages i read a stat about loneliness and it got me thinking. Onboarding new employees should be more than just a handshake and a tour of the office kitchen. Its like being thrown into a pool without knowing how to swim. That’s exactly how many new hires incliding mysefl in my early career feel when onboarding is treated like a mere formality rather than a way to set you up for success and integrate you into the business/org. Here is the stat from the book - Research has shown that loneliness can have a severe impact on health, equating to the damage caused by smoking 15 cigarettes a day. When employees start a new job, they are especially vulnerable to feelings of isolation and disconnection. This is why a well-designed onboarding process is so crucial—it’s not just about equipping new hires with knowledge and tools, but also about creating a sense of belonging and community that can literally be life-saving. It’s your first real opportunity to demonstrate your company’s culture, values, and expectations. Most importantly, it’s your chance to make new employees feel connected and valued right from the start. More stats - a well-structured onboarding process can reduce employee turnover by up to 82% and increase productivity by over 70%. But when you skimp on this crucial phase, you risk leaving your new team members feeling lost, unsupported, and, worst of all, lonely—a state that could severely impact their well-being and lead them to question whether they made the right choice in joining your company. Employee onboarding is pretty much my day job recently - for people who don't know, i joined Cognexo as Head of Customer in January after being a customer of theirs for a year previous. Wanted to share this excellent playbook put together by Dublin-founded 🇮🇪 Frontline Ventures - a firm I first came across when I was the acting head of marketing for Fresco. (Fun fact: that was my first fractional role back in 2014). Will Prendergast and the team, were always smart and considered about helping their portfolio companies break out of Ireland and into new markets. My work with Ben Harris and the co-founding Fresco team was all about planting a big flag in the US 🇺🇲 - which we did! This playbook - intended for startups coming out of Europe - would be just as useful for companies coming out of New Zealand and Australia (with a few minor adjustments).
