Thief: Review | Lead Example

Thief simply titled is the fourth entry in the Thief stealth game series. After many years, this title has finally been revived once again by Eidos Montreal with the next entry in the series. Should the series have stayed quiet, or does this entry the next big groundbreaking stealth title?

If you aren't going to do it right, don't do it. All this poo has done is destroy the name of a once good series.

Austacker3714d ago (Edited 3714d ago )

Agreed. I've finished this game already on master level difficulty and was pretty disappointed all round.

I'm an old school Thief player and this release was buggy, the AI sucked, The plot was cliche, boring and lame (save the girl, save the world? Oh ffs!). The game mechanics blew and were repetitive. Most of the game was on rails, you can't even fire a rope arrow except in a designated area, The 'escape' scene was lame and the game ending was as anti-climactic as it gets.

This game is a blight on the franchise & honestly, I regret buying it.

I really wanted to give this game a go and I played through 12 hours to try and stretch it out, but the game just never got better. If anything, it got worse. By the end, I wanted to literally throw the game disk out the window.

Only thing I'm glad of is the fact I've finished playing this and will not feel the need to play it again.

If you're a traditional thief franchise lover, prepare to be disappointed. This game is a turd. A polished turd, but a turd none the less.

Avoid.

starchild3714d ago

No, I won't avoid it, nor should anybody that likes the game. Quit trying to speak for everyone. You obviously have an ax to grind.

I have been a fan of the Thief series since the first game and I honestly like the new game quite a lot. Lots of people do.

I haven't encountered any more bugs than in most games I have played. The only bug I ever saw was a guard spinning around in a circle.

The AI doesn't suck. That's a load of BS. The AI is just as good as in other stealth games. Better than in the Assassin's Creed games, for example, and about on par with games like Splinter Cell Blacklist and Dishonored.

Most of the other stuff you said is simply untrue or something highly subjective. You can't simply say that everybody that is a long-time Thief fan is going to be disappointed. You also can't say it IS a turd as if it were a fact. You can say you didn't personally like it, but that's it.

Why do you spend so much energy trying to tear something down and hate on something? I've never understood that mentality. I mostly just ignore games that I don't like. I choose to focus on what I do like.

I'd love to hear what games you think are good. Because I'm sure that it would reveal massive hypocrisy on your part. All the things you bash Thief for are probably true of your favorite games as well.

Raf1k13713d ago

I agree. The game is good. People to who argue otherwise tend not to be able to give a reasonable explanation as to why they think it's bad.

I've played the older Thief games too and while the game annoys me a fair bit in certain areas it's still quite good overall.

lemoncake3713d ago

This pretty much sums up how I felt about it also after playing.

leadexample3713d ago

This is one of those games you either love your hate. I've had my issues with it, but it's not terrible. It could just do with some refining. But as I mentioned, stealth games haven't evolved much, and they pose little challenge so it seems. Thief is worth playing, just don't expect it to blow you away.

Thief - Taken From Us Too Soon

The Thief game series has had many ups-and-downs, and 2014's reboot showed a great deal of promise nearly a decade ago.

Notellin279d ago

This would be such a great franchise to reboot. A darker game than Dishonored, but focused around stealth and large scale heists from an oppressive monarchy.

That's probably my dream game. I love immersive sims and stealth!

Noskypeno279d ago

People say they hate forced stealth sections in games. But a game focused on stealth with good mechanics and level design feels refreshing from the guns blazing games which I also enjoy. I really enjoyed playing Splinter cell, a game that not many try to mimic today. Not too many games let you shoot lights out, or throw cans or bottles to distract guards. Sure there are games with stealth options like the new Wolfenstein but it doesn't feel necessary to play it that way. Hitman might be the only game that has that feeling, except for that Korean game that may or may not ever come out.

isarai279d ago

You should try the Sniper Elite games, so good, especially with coop

Notellin278d ago

Same here. I'm glad there are some other people who enjoy these types of games!

@isarai I tried Sniper Elite 5 and ended up really enjoying that one. Went back and played 4 as well!.

ModsDoBetter279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

The last one was a trainwreck and has been in the bargain bin since just after launch. If they bring it back, they need a massive change in direction.

Inverno279d ago

only direction they should take is putting it in reverse and going back to what the originals did. I couldn't finish this game, and I made a choice to never play it again. I watched a video about the og Thief and Deus Ex games and the current AAA standard will forever hold back these games. These 2 games alone had already solved so many problems with modern gaming that I don't think they'll get a chance at something great unless they're made by a dev that actually give a damn.

Jesus the last installment sells at about 2 euro and even that is over paying for it. Absolutely diabolical game

SimpleSlave279d ago

Ups and Down? More like Up, UP, Pot Hole, Free Fall into the Abyss...

Thief Deadly Shadows remaster would be awesome.
