He drove thousands of men and women into monasteries under oaths of poverty and celibacy, a sacrifice freely given under the all-consuming power of their devotion.”

Summary
1934— A doctor is free from the confines of a prison camp after 15 years, but in the late eve, he learns that an old acquaintance, an architect who built his home on the ruins of an old fort, now desecrated and dark, is very much alive and well. He travels to the dark heart of the countryside where he discovers that his 'old friend' is preparing for a night of ritual.
And what goes on in the faintly lit chambers of the architect's home is nothing but one monstrosity after the other. A young woman is chosen to be a maid clad in white, and as the 'festivities' begin, Werdegast realizes he is trapped in the estate as an unwilling viewer and perhaps participant; once the ritual is ready to begin, the cult members gather 'round and begin to form a loyal congregation, ready to obey every whim and command given to them by Poelzig, their leader.
