The best way to explain it is that games have gone from being a simple toy for children to a medium that explores the same mature themes as movies and literature whiling giving freedom of total control over ones own destiny. Now we have games that explore the dark side of Objectivism (BioShock), question the stability of modern society (Tom Clancy's The Division), understand the horrors of war on a person (Spec Ops: The Line) or critic a society that rewards crooks while challenging the illusion of the American Dream (Grand Theft auto IV).
