Before the war James Barnes and Steve Rogers had promised that they would belong to each other until the end of the line. They had made such a deep bond that after Steve became Captain America and was forbidden to say he is an Omega, the two made the decision to secretly marry. Then Bucky fell off the train and became the Winter Soldier.
When the memories came back and helped him come to his senses, he realized that his love no longer belonged to him.

But he thought of Steve laying in hospital beds, tubes and wires attached to him and machines blinking. He’d seen the rhythm of Steve’s heart so many times he could picture it when he heard it.
