Resolution may soon be filed urging House to support Sereno, says Lagman

Albay Representative Edcel Lagman believes that a resolution will soon be filed urging the House to support Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

This, after several congressmen across party lines signed a resolution calling the Lower House to support, preserve and protect the constitutional independence and integrity of the Office of the Ombudsman.

"I think another resolution would be forthcoming," Lagman told reporters in a press conference on Tuesday.

Twenty-six lawmakers coming from different political parties signed a resolution on Monday rallying support for the anti-graft office.

The resolution came only less than two weeks after President Rodrigo Duterte said he would create a commission that would investigate the anti-graft office and its personnel.

The office had opened an investigation into the president's alleged multi-billion wealth.

Duterte also threatened to file an impeachment complaint against Sereno on top of the case she is currently facing right now at the House of Representatives.

Lagman said the resolution supporting the Ombudsman was only prioritized first by its proponents, but he believes that the one for Sereno will follow not long after.

"The protection of the independence of the Ombudsman is prioritized by those who conceived the resolution [but] I think it [the resolution for Sereno] is forthcoming," he said. — BM, GMA News
