Thrillist revealed its new annual best new restaurant list yesterday, and the new group is to be called the Prime 13. That means there aren’t many slots available nationally for restaurants to make the cut, but Los Angeles managed to skip away with two: Felix (the overall winner) and Mh Zh.
That’s right, the tiny corner shop with no alcohol, paper bag menus, and a sub 500-square-foot interior just got a national nod as one of the best places to eat anywhere in America. Expect the evening waits to get even longer now.
A chance at the Tavern
Burbank’s new Empire Tavern is hosting soft opening hours this weekend, with beers from places like Beachwood, Cellador, and Highland Park Brewery. The party starts at 2 p.m. sharp.
Indian food with passion
Downtown’s Badmaash gets some love on the next episode of Emmy-winning KCET show The Migrant Kitchen. As always Life & Thyme shot the thing, making for a pretty compelling look at the family-run Indian favorite. The full episode airs on Wednesday.
Andy Ricker returns
Pok Pok chef Andy Ricker is returning to Los Angeles next month for a one-night meal with Kris Yenbamroong of Night + Market. The pair will cook a bunch of stuff at the West Hollywood location to toast each’s new cookbook, and the $100 tickets will include a copy of both.
Gracias Madre x Oaxaca
Gracias Madre is doing an earthquake relief fundraiser for Oaxaca on Thursday, November 23. The West Hollywood restaurant’s effort will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (it is the day of Thanksgiving after all) in partnership with Guelaguetza, and they’ll be serving a fully vegan holiday meal while accepting suggested donations.
Sweetgreen stays sweet
Sweetgreen is opening in Marina Del Rey, and to celebrate the salad chain is donating 100% of today’s profits to Covenant House, a non-profit tackling the homeless youth situtation in LA. Just show up to 4700 Admiralty Way between 10:30 a.m. and 10 p.m.
The Mighty gets stronger
There’s been some healthy shake-up at Downtown’s The Mighty, starting with full table service for dinner (lunch remains counter service). The Hatfields have also tweaked the evening menu some, but are still working a sub-$17 collection of plates to share.
