“Geostorm” Soars & “Blade Runner” Fizzles In China

Domestically both “Geostorm” and “Blade Runner 2049” didn’t set the box-office on fire, though the latter fared better in terms of both revenue and critical acclaim. Both films have now opened in China and it looks like the opposite has happened.

“Geostorm” took the Chinese box-office by storm, opening this past weekend to a very robust $33 million and taking first place. “Blade Runner 2049” on the other hand opened in third with just $7.35 million, thanks said to be in part due to the original film having little recognition in China and underperforming in the United States.

As it stands “Geostorm” sits at $136 million worldwide, while “Blade Runner 2049” is at $223 million. Though ‘2049’ opened two weeks earlier, its foreign cume to date is likely to be passed by “Geostorm” this week. Both films however will likely not hit profit at the box-office due to their costly $120 million+ budgets.
