FPS drops tied to CPU being maxed out
Hey everyone,

it realy doesnt seem to matter what kind of GPU you are using . The performance issues most people here are complaining about are tied to CPU getting maxed out 100 percent at all times. This results in fps drops and stutter. As far as I know there is no work around.

I did some research online and some gaming mags are stating that they had less issues using a 6 or 8 core processor. I think most of us dont have that. I´m running the game on a GTX 1080 ti and a i7 4790K (thats 4x4 on 8 threads). Im doing fine for some seconds and the game is at around 70 to 90 frames and then comes the CPU hitch and I drop to 40 or even lower to 32fps.

Maybe its an issue because its a console port and thos CPUs have 6 or even 8 cores as far as I know. I fell like ubisoft should have anticipatet this however. I dont believe this is an issue you can adress with just a small day one patch! also that patch as far as i know was part of the original download so its out already.

Since I did not buy the game over Steam I'm the sore loser who can't refund. After the hot mess with AC Unity I'm negativly surprised by ubis descision to release the game like this.

Please don't ask if I got the game ready driver! I did ! However like I said its a CPU problem. Just open your task manager on a second screen while u play and see for your selves.

Drop me a line if you're having similar issues.

Thanx Jerome

Appreciate you sharing this level of detail on what you're running into with the CPU.
Fugana Oct 27, 2017 @ 7:45am
This is a 4 cores CPU, the game have avout 50-60% utilization on 6 core CPU, we are talking about REAL cores, hyperthreading aint real cores they just help the real ones to assimilate information a bit easy.
Maybe upgrade to 6 core?

Try getting Genuine Intel(R) CPU, it's the only thing that can handle Denuvo v6.

4x4 is 4 cores at 4 Ghz on 8 threads. I' aware 8 threads doesnt mean real cores. Like I wrote 6 to 8 real cores seems to run the game better. Mostly games on PC use 4 however so must people use 4 core processors.

Yep i tough all games until 2020 will use mainly 4 cores thus i bought ryzen 3 1200 XD maybe ill upgrade next year to 6 real cores.

It does matter what GPU you have because the better the gpu the more it can handle the cpu bottleneck like for me I averaged 70fps in benchmark game is smooth with 1070 and 4970k but my cpu usage was as high as 97% and gpu usage was never fully utilized at 97%/98%.

its ubisoft kiev. ALL their games choke the cpu. they care about little else.

you guy are seriously surprised? black flag, unity, syndicate, ac3? ring any bells?

you should have seen this coming. if you can name me one ubisoft pc port that doesn't scale poorly on the cpu, then i'll be surprised.

4x4 is 4 cores 4 threads(i5). 4x8 is 4 cores 8 threads(i7) Has hyperthreading allowing 2 threads to make a virtual core totaling 8 cores. Just correcting you really.

Please let me know if you find a fix becasue I have the same exact rig and am having the same problem, the game is unplayable.

I have the same CPU (Intel Core i7-4790K @4.0 GHz) and a GTX 1080. I messed around with graphical changes and there was no difference to CPU usage vs very low to ultra high graphical settings. Lowering the resolution or changing the resolution modifier were also very subtle changes. However when I limited the frame rate it cut down on the CPU usage noticeably.

The following was done in ultra high settings on 1080 res. vsync off. resolution modifier 100%. Just running around in the first village.

My highest during the test was 86% usage (cpu at 100%) with unlimited frame rate.
-60fps lock was 78-80%
-45fps lock dropped to 68-70%
-30 fps lock was 58%.

Did tests on very low graphical settings for comparison (rest was the same)
-unlimited frame rate usage was at 86% (cpu 100%)
-60 fps lock it was 78%
-45 fps lock was 70%
-30 fps lock was 58%.

The biggest way to save the CPU usage is in locking the fps. I'm no pro but I would theorize they are throwing the graphic outputs to the CPU rather than GPU. To get the to work on the 30fps of consoles it seems they focused that. Again no idea but since locking the fps helps a ton and my GPU seems to just sit there twiddling it's thumbs I'd suspect they're just throwing a lot of the graphics to CPU. Especially since going very low to ultra high didn't change the cpu usage (obviously cause it's the GPU's job to do that not CPU) Sad to have to lock the fps on PC but at the end of the day if it's an enjoyable experience I'll get over it.

Edit: For reference for me Playing Shadow of War (to try and get a relative sense of the current gen games) puts my CPU usage at low 50% at the worst of times. tried doing AC black flag to get a point of origin for ubisoft but that was low 20%'s at worst.

I rather have more cores than a slightly faster quad-core. I feel sorry for all those 7700K owners. As more open world games come out they're going to use more cores and even games that aren't open world are starting to use more cores like mankind divided so basically if you want the ultra graphics on upcoming open world games and to run in 4k at over 60fps then you're going to need an 8-core processor to be future-proofed for a while.

yes smart choice but truth here is there is an issue causing cpu bottlenecks. Battlefield 1 beta had similar issues then upon release were gone. Had a few games with such issues eventually get patched/fixed.

Anyways there is also streaming which totatlly justifies going 8 core.

I discovered the same thing yesterday. What I'm actuall doing right now is playing it on my 4k tv with the frame rate locked at 30. Even with rtesolution at 4k and all settings on ultra my processor stay around 75 percent useage. the 30 frames are ok...they seem more stable than 30 to 100 frames with the constant drops.

I have a 8 core processor, the game runs flawlessly, BUT I can feel that the computer is working to play it smoothly, haha.

Vision Beast ROG - Intel® Core™ i7-5960X 8x3.0GHz(Turbo 3.5GHz) 20MB cache

8 cores.16 threads.
