Yes the book is dated ,but reading it today shows one that the predictions that were of concern back then was not the out come today . Having lived through the time when this book was written it made a big splash
back then and people did have concerns about the climate inline with this book. And yes we did have cooling but not the bitter cold predicted in this book. This book was the ground work for todays climate fear of Doom

This book is a well researched exposition of the fact accepted by most governments and scientists in the 1970s: the earth is cooling rapidly and we are entering the next periodic ice age. It's a lot more scientific than Al Gore's work. Principally, it will make you realize that our so-called scientists, supported by government research grants, will predict whatever will make them the most money. (Then it was cooling; now it's warming). Draw your own conclusions.

I read this book shortly after it came out and was impressed with it.

Since that time real science has been done and found it to be a lot of errors and empty speculation.

Even when it was written the scientists considered it to be a hoot.

This is the so called science that all the Climate Change Deniers use to say that in the 70s we were going into an Ice Age.

We do go into Ice Ages every 15000 years or so, this book never proved that one was right around the corner.

Lowell Ponte has never been a scientist.

Read this book for a laugh, but don't take thing he says seriously.

This book is an absolute joke, full of lies, inaccuracies, fallacies. It cites studies that are outdated, and skewed. It's clear this guy has an agenda. While this curmudgeonly man is writing this crap, (and won't be much longer on this earth), we get to deal with the consequences of GLOBAL WARMING. Literally every scientist on earth agrees that global warming is happening, and its being caused by us. Books like this are dangerous to humanity and anyone who takes them seriously should get therapy.

Just out of curiosity I looked up this book basically I am sick to death of the global warming junk, read this book
25 years ago and saw a lot that made sense and after watching each winter get colder and colder and summer
not seeming to last so long I just wanted to look this book up and see the reviews at first I was surprised at the
remarks then I looked at dates on the reviews over 12 years ago, does not seem so far fetched now eh.

I read this book some time ago and found it interesting and readable. Ponte explains that the earth may be in fact in an intergalacial period and that the earth may soon be actually cooling. Ponte examines the scientific data and presents it in a convincing manner.

I put some credence into this book when it was published so many years ago. Historically, we should be gradually heading toward another ice age, thousands of years in the future. However, this prediction has been thoroughly disproven by climate temps since then:

"The record heat of 2015 adds to other long term warming trends. Of the hottest years on record, 15 out of 17 have come since 2000. By contrast, more than a century has gone by since the planet had a record cold year (1911). In addition, this marks 39 years in a row with above average global temperatures..." from Climate Central, published Jan 20th, 2016.

The fact that this obvious warming has occurred, when trends suggested the planet should be cooling, adds more proof to the global warming position, rather than any reason to doubt it. 2015 was the warmest year on record by a strong margin, and 2014 was the next warmest. Denial won't
help. We clearly should try to at least slow the rate of warming, if we can. The books premise wasn't outlandish, just proven to be incorrect.

I read this book when it first came out and found it very interesting. But it seemed to fall off the radar screen. Now, 30 years later, I believe it was truly before it's time. Unlike other reviewers, I find that there is nothing contradictory between many of the observations and predictions that the author made 30 years and much of the concerns of the global environmental community regarding global climate change. Serious scientists who have been concerned about climate change for several decades have never claimed to know the full reprecussions of this climate change. And more and more are using the phrase, "global climate change" rather than "global warming" for exactly this reason. And there is, indeed, increasing concern that we could very well be heading into another ice age as a direct result of increased carbon emissions.

    Mr. Ponte was indeed prescient!
