Mother!: Box office flop defended by Star Wars director amid scathing reviews
STAR WARS director Rian Johnson has defended Jennifer Lawrence’s latest movie Mother! - as it continues to receive a battering from audiences.
The horror received a lowest-possible grade of F from viewers in a CinemaScore survey, and its box office gross this weekend is forecast to be a lowly $8 million.
Johnson, however, seemed to have enjoyed it.
He tweeted: “Oh my god I loved Mother! - are people talking about how insanely funny it is?
“The movie Mother! most reminded me of wasn't Rosemary's Baby, it was Welles's version of The Trial.”
Further batting away comparisons to Rosemary’s Baby, he told one follower: “Not at all - it's more like a Kafka story, hilariously absurd.”
Asked if he found it intentionally rib-tickling, he clarified: “I think it was supposed to be absurdist funny...
“I loved it and I was laughing all the way through.”
Johnson is thought to have now put the finishing touches on the new Star Wars movie - Episode 8: The Last Jedi - which will be out in December.

The film has a lot to live up to, given the astronomical successes of 2015’s Episode 7: The Force Awakens and 2016’s anthology tale Rogue One.
The Last Jedi is expected to be one of the big box office hits of 2017, but whether it can match its two predecessors remains to be seen.
Mother! is out now. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on December 14 in the UK.
