Wanna get away, Michigan? Southwest fares fall below $100 as part of 72-hour sale

The weather's still nice in Michigan, but those temperatures could drop at any time.

That means it's as good a time as any to plan a getaway trip.

Southwest Airlines' twice-a-year airfare sale is back for 72 hours, starting today, with many fares dropping below $100 round-trip for flights from Oct. 31-Dec. 19 and from Jan. 3-Feb. 14 (flights on Fridays and Sundays are excluded.)

The sale also includes longer routes, with the price of flights loosely tied to distance. Flights begin at $49 each way on Southwest’s shortest routes and increase to $79, $99 or $129 each way for longer flights. Domestic fares included in the sale appear to top out at $154 each way.

So for Michiganders, we have good news and bad news. We'll start with the bad news: The only $49 one-way flights out of Detroit Metro Airport are to Chicago (Midway) and Baltimore. The good news is there are still some great deals on flights to Atlanta ($69 one-way), Nashville ($75), Dallas ($79) and St. Louis ($79). You also could fly to Phoenix for $123 one-way and Las Vegas for $149 one-way.

Your options greatly increase if you're willing to drive to Chicago Midway, where flights to cities such as Kansas City, Memphis, St. Louis and Pittsburgh start at $49 one-way. You also could opt for Charleston, S.C., Atlanta, Boston, New Orleans or Washington, D.C. for $79 or cheaper one-way.

If you'd rather fly out of Cleveland, flights to Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis start at $49 one-way. There's also Nashville ($64) and Denver ($99) to consider.
