A new trademark was recently filed in Japan that indicates that Nintendo could be working on a miniature Game Boy in the same vein as the recently released SNES Classic Edition.

As of September 15, Nintendo filed a trademark for what looks to be a miniature Game Boy. This is noteworthy, as a few months prior to the releases of the NES and SNES Classic Edition we saw something similar.

Now, whether this is a functional miniature Game Boy remains to be seen but my guess is that it is likely. Bundling a selection of classic Game Boy games on a reduced sized handheld is something that could be gloriously good.

It is here that I have to own up to being a Game Boy collector and that the formative handheld is probably one of my favorite gaming devices of all time.

Since living in Japan, I have also been building up my Game Boy collection quite a bit (shown above) and I still rate many of the games on the system as some of the best ever made.

All that aside, the real reason why this could be a stroke of genius, if it is a genuinely playable mini Game Boy, is that Japan is currently overrun by mobile gaming.

Mobile has heavily disrupted the market in Japan, shutting out more traditional console games from getting investment. In part, this is why the Nintendo Switch took the portable angle it did.

So having a mini Game Boy is something that might help to remind people in Japan that traditional handheld games still exist.

In any case, I only hope that this mini Game Boy is what I think it is because if it is not, I don’t think I could take the disappointment.
