Seriously Wicked #3

Seriously Hexed

Rate this book
Tina Connolly continues the hilarious adventures of teen witch Camellia and her mother, wicked witch Sarmine, in this latest installment to the Andre Norton Award-nominated "Seriously Wicked" series.

Teen witch Cam has resigned herself to being a witch. Sort of. She s willing to do small things, like magically help her boyfriend Devon get over his ongoing stage fright. But tangling with other witches is not on her wishlist. Joining her mother s wicked witch coven is right out.

New acquaintance Poppy Jones is a Type A, A+ Student of True Witchery. She s got all the answers, and she s delighted to tangle with a bunch of wicked witches. She doesn t need any reluctant witch getting in her way, especially one who knows less than a dozen spells, and has zero plans for witch college.

Then a coven meeting goes drastically awry. A hex is taking down all thirteen members of the coven, one by one putting both girls mothers in jeopardy. Now the two teens are going to have to learn to work together, while simultaneously juggling werewolf puppies, celebrity demons, thirteen nasty hexes, and even nastier witches. They may have to go through hell and high water to save their mothers but they also might find a new friendship along the way.

3.5 Stars!

This has been such a seriously fun, seriously quirky series from the very first book and I do think it is just getting even more fun, more crazy, and even more hilarious as it goes. With Cam learning more and more about herself, her powers and the people around her, all while trying to appear normal and have a relationship with not only her family but friends too, the hi-jinks and chaos never end.

Truly a fun read regardless of your age if you want to step back, relax, laugh a whole lot, and just have a feel good time and escape from the troubles of the world, this is the series for you.

This was a good ending to the trilogy. I enjoyed it. I liked how she was able to work with Poppy and they even began to like each each other in the end. The best part was the ending. I won't say much because it will give too much away. Just know that things ended well for Cam and her mother.

My official rating: 7.5 out of 10 spells

This time, things are getting crazy! Cam finds herself thrust into her parents' coven where she meets Poppy, another young witch. At first, Cam's not so thrilled about the turn of events, especially since her mom has disappeared in front of their very eyes and Poppy's mother, Lily, has taken it upon herself to care for Cam and ensure her safety, but is that even possible? A hex is systematically taking our the witches in the coven, one by one. Cam and Poppy have figured out a few pieces, but the only thing they can manage to think about is that both Cam and Lilly are on the hit list and Cam may never see her mother again! The worst part, the adults don't seem to be doing nearly enough to solve the problem, even if they are in danger themselves!

This last edition to the Seriously Wicked series was different then the other two. Cam spends less time at school and, sadly Devon and Jennah aren't in it nearly as much as they were in the first two books. At first, I was sad. Jennah's one of my favorite characters! But, in reality, I kind of fell in love with Poppy, too. In the end, this book seemed to have far greater lessons for the reader and I found myself loving this book more then I did the other two (and I really enjoyed them, too)! The interactions between Poppy and Cam while watching their relationship develop was so sweet. Getting to see what it's like to use magic in every day life for honorable reasons was entertaining. Seeing witches that weren't about world domination or turning their kids into solar panels was not just nice, but reassuring and gives hope.

My favorite part, though wasn't a ground breaking moment, it was a moment between Cam and Poppy in which they paid "homage" to Anne of Green Gables, which made me so giddy! I love Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorites and this was such a cute moment that high lighted the girls' new found relationship while paying homage to a story that I have loved since I was in elementary school.

All in all, this was a great end to the trilogy, though I'd love to see more! It was a fun read and furthered my excitement to share it with my daughter in the near future! The trilogy as a whole was cute, sweet, fun and entertaining. It was quirky and silly. It was a great read for something of a "mindless" nature and this last installment is a big part of that!

This is a sequel to Seriously Wicked (a phoenix is rising and threatens to blow up Cam's high school and a demon inhabits Devon) and Seriously Shifted (Malkin is after a shapeshifter).

Camellia doesn't want to be a witch, but is reconciled to it and she definitely won't be an evil witch. While trying to protect Devon from a mind reading witch Cam's glamor spell instead makes him invisible. Claudette and other witches are in town because Sarmine has called a meeting of the Cascadia coven. At the meeting she inducts Cam into the coven. Soon after she vanishes. With Cam's mother gone, Lily takes Cam home. Cam and Poppy, Lily's daughter, aren't going to do nothing. They start interviewing the witches at the coven and soon discover the hex that got Sarmine is getting each of the witches in turn.

Fun and easy to read, lots of action and adventure. Dangerous situations. Clever mystery that has tie-ins to the first two books, more than just Malkin sending the hex to Sarmine. Great characters, their actions are believable, and Cam's sense of ethics makes her worthy to be a hero.

My English review

I liked the first two volumes. It’s always nice to find a YA novel with witches like that! And then it must be said that Cam is really not a witch like others and she is very good at finding herself in more than delicate situations.

From the beginning of the novel, Cam has to deal with the consequences of her witch life. Indeed, she made her boyfriend Devon accidentally invisible and nothing would seem to make him reappear. But on top of that, her mother forces her to take a place in the coven of which she is a member, although she has no desire to do so. It is also during this meeting that her mother disappears without a trace and while Cam forges an alliance with Poppy, one of the fellow witches, they discover that each person present during this exchange is struck by a spell. To understand what is happening and to save everyone, our two heroines will team up and discover a story much more complicated than she thought.

I enjoyed this story once again. Cam is still accepting her condition and finally realizing that her mother is not exactly what she thought. I really enjoyed learning more about her past and her father, whom we hear a lot about since the first novel. We also discover a little more about the world of these women and what they hide.

Cam is your typical teenager. She’s got friends, wonders how her awesome boyfriend could like such an awkward girl as her, and is frantically studying for her American History test. The only exception is that she’s a witch. However, it’s that extra complication that makes her high school years less than typical.

For example, most teenagers don’t have to deal with their mother disappearing during a coven meeting.

Cam and her mom don’t exactly get along. In SERIOUSLY WICKED we learn why their relationship is strained and that Cam wants to take her witch-life in a different direction than her mother. In SERIOUSLY SHIFTED we begin to see a slight shift as Cam holds her own and earns respect from her mom. Unfortunately we don’t see much of Scarmine in SERIOUSLY HEXED, but we begin to understand what her mom really means to Cam (cue “awwwwws”). Scarmine calls a coven meeting, something that hasn’t happened for many years, partly to install her daughter as a new member (since the old one was eaten in SERIOUSLY SHIFTED), and to open a mystery package from said dead witch Malkin.

Everything goes wrong, thanks to the hexed package. Cam’s mom disappears. Other witches are being hexed on a regular schedule, and it’s only a matter of time until Cam is hexed herself. Will she disappear like her mom?

But even when things go wrong, there’s something that goes right: Cam makes a new friend in Poppy, the daughter of another coven witch. They take Cam home so she isn’t by herself after her mom disappears, and while Poppy’s mom tries to figure out what’s going on Cam and Poppy do their own investigations together. Poppy is everything Cam isn’t: organized, super smart, and popular. At first they work together out of necessity, but then they learn to rely on each other and it’s very fun to watch their friendship blossom.

We also see new characters in the magical creatures community, including sasquatches and werewolves, and learn more about how Cam’s dad was an advocate for stopping witch mistreatment of magical creatures. Its seems that Cam takes after her dad in a lot of ways. Sure most of the time we get to know these new characters, but while we don’t see a lot of Devon (literally), Cam’s best friend Jenah, and Cam’s mom, they still have integral roles to play in the story and Cam’s life. She sure is a lucky girl to be surrounded by such loyal and amazing people, especially when times get hard.

While most of the story revolves around the people and understanding the mystery of the hexes, Connolly spends plenty of time helping us to understand the magical part of the world, which does end up being important in solving the hexing mystery–although not as much as understanding people and their motivations. I was still left with questions and some of her magical details felt a little lacking, but ultimately this is a story about a high schooler and is for a YA audience so going deep into worldbuilding really isn’t necessary.

Ultimately, this is a great series for your middle school or early high school readers because it’s about doing what’s right, even when it’s hard (and who knows, you may even change the world in the process), and how friendships mean being a good friend first. Highly recommended.

This series just Seriously kept getting better. Let me just preface this review with the fact that this is younger YA, but the richness of the issues Connolly tackles (ethical treatment of animals for human purposes, handling old friends when new friends dovetail with your interests more, standing up for what is right when you are powerless) as well as the greater sensitivity to the fact that these issues are impacting our world right now as we speak in the USA, means that even adults will get more than a laugh out of this.

And you will laugh, because darnnit, Poppy, Jenah and her Kit Kat girls, and Cam are funny, and Connolly's wry sense of humor is apparent throughout the book. Like when Poppy's "identify that spell" app on her phone mangles voice recognition of "bomb spell" into "ye old auntie mame spell" or the way Cam indentifies three of the witches in her mom's coven as "trio of canadians" and then proceeds to call one "boring skirt".

And you might even be inspired, by passages like this one:

"Because the thing is, at some point you've got to do something about what you believe in. You've got to stand up for truth, and justice, and all that stuff...And what is right might be hard to figure out, and it may not be black and white, and it might not be easy to do. You have to pick up and muddle through, and you'll make mistakes....Because the reverse is even a bigger mistake. Failure to act is a mistake. Letting the world go to hell in a handbasket is a mistake."

I don't know about you but I want my children to be reading books like this; that have main characters who make mistakes. Who learn from those mistakes and try to do better. Cam messes up her relationship with her best friend, and then tries to do better. She messes up rescuing her mother from a hex, and then tries to do better.

But most of all, I think in today's U.S., under the current administration, I think its more important than ever to help youth (and adults!) realize that even small voices count, and this book, while tickling your funny bone, does a bang up job of that.

Seriously, go get this series for any girl in your life between the ages of eight to eighteen.

I really loved the first two books and although this final in the trilogy wasn't quite as good I still enjoyed it. In the beginning everything happened too fast and flippantly and there were several moments of "oops you blinked and missed something huge" that left the story a little unbalanced. I think it was a case of the story being too big for the thin book, but eventually things spread out a bit and I got used to the pace. I also wasn't crazy about Cam in this one - she was acting emotionally young and didn't want to get involved while in the next breath had no problem walking straight into certain danger.

Cam: We're just teens what do we know, let the adults take care of things that's what they're for.
Poppy: Let's go do this horribly dangerous thing ourselves.
Cam: Yeah sure, let's go.

And then there was the story's "message." The young people were all about reforming witchery and the old witches' medieval ways for the betterment of their living spell ingredients, which is all well and good. But it pushed the lesson of "standing up for and doing what you believe is right no matter the consequences" a little too hard for me, overwhelming the fun of the story at times. All that said though, it was still the magical read that I expected and enjoyed, and I'm sad the trilogy has ended. I'll definitely be keeping my copies for a re-read someday.

Disclosure: I received a review copy in exchange for a honest review.

3 1/2 stars.

This series gives me major Sabrina the Teen Witch vibes, a show I loved growing up. In the third and final installment of the Seriously Wicked series we continue to watch as Cam balances life as a witch and teenager in high school. At the start of the story, Cam is getting ready to be initiated into her mother’s coven except things go wrong the night of initiation when her mom disappears. Things go from bad to worst when a nasty hex starts targeting coven members. With the help of a fellow witch, Cam sets out to find out who the culprit is and to find her mom before the hex hit her next.

This series was so much fun! I loved Cam and her friends. Connolly did a great job showcasing cam’s witchy side and all the normal things teenagers had to deal with such as school, friendship and the dreaded process of applying for college…that despite being a witch, they were all pretty normal like the rest of us and had the same problems. In Seriously Hexed, we found out a lot more about the coven witches, Sarmine’s past and finally…what happened to Cam’s dad! One of the biggest mystery since the first book.

I really enjoyed Seriously Hexed, and the entire series overall. If you’re looking for a good witch series that’s light, fun and all around feel-good then I highly recommend picking up this series, starting with the first book, Seriously Wicked.

This was seriously a great conclusion to the trilogy. While I was concerned with the number of spinning plates being added to the system, everything wrapped up neatly. Lots of fun, and I look forward to where Tina goes next.

In the finale of this trilogy, Cam finally gets some answers to questions she wasn't aware she was asking. The danger of this book feels more serious and the conclusion to all things left me warm and happy for Cam.

Such a great book, so hilarious, and I loved all the developments and answers to questions! It's a great end to the series, which I believe this book is, since there hasn't been another book published. Which is too bad, because it's so awesome, but I really enjoyed reading it!

I really enjoyed this series and I felt like this was a very good end to the story. I also really liked the new character that was introduced in this book, Poppy. And I would like it if there was a spin of where we could follow Poppy's life for a little.

I am so excited that Devon and Cam are finally dating, they really do make an adorable couple. Ending the last book with a kiss made me extremely excited for Seriously Hexed. Turning her boyfriend invisible however, shouldn't have been on her bucket list. Then finding something to make him reappear, yikes! What about making him into a turnip! Since Cam joined her mother's coven it's been a little awkward considering she knows few spells. By meeting Poppy Jones, she learns more about witchery and magic. In this book a new hex has arrived in the coven and to beat it the girls must go through all while building a new friendship along the way. I could highly relate to this book since it included a lot of team building and effort in order to stop a problem. On top of all that, knowing that this hex was taking down the witches which included both girls mothers meant that the stakes were high and having Cam's mom leave without a trace meant that the challenge was even more difficult than they imagined. Even though the girls went through some stressful situations, they were still able to succeed which I felt a majority if not all readers could understand. Making connections to this book (and the other two), made me realise how similar I was to Cam (well, except for being a witch). What the girls discover in the end is shocking. So, overall the entire series has been good, this book may have ended a bit flat, but the adventure was a thrill. Finally, in this three book series, Cam is able to learn more about herself, her mother, witchery, and friendship/bonds leading her to a bright future in which she will be unsurpassed by other witches while being able to live a somewhat normal life.
