Breast cancer hits close to home for Alejandra Espinoza. The former beauty queen, 30, who usually shares sweet photos of her 2-year-old son Matteo and fun fashion posts, has opened up about her sister’s recent cancer diagnosis and how it has affected her.

Wearing a pink shirt, she recently joined a walk against cancer in San Diego, California’s Balboa Park, saying she was there to support her sister, who was diagnosed last May. On Instagram, the Univision host wrote: “In any battle your best ally is God and prayer is your strongest weapon.” Puerto Rican reggaeton star Wisin, whose mother is also a cancer survivor, responded to her post: “Amen!”

“Let your faith be bigger than your fear,” Espinoza urged her sister in another post. “For you warrior. I know you may feel despair, you may not feel as pretty as before. Maybe you will cry when you are on your own, at times you may not even like your favorite food or just hearing the word ‘chemotherapy’ will make you feel nauseous. I know there may be a lot of things going through your mind. All I ask is the biggest favor in the world: Never, ever stop fighting.”

Espinoza also praised reggaeton singer Daddy Yankee for his recent release Yo contra ti, an anthem to cancer patients and their loved ones. “An applause for all the family members of those affected by this disease because worse than having it, is seeing it in someone you love,” she wrote, “An even bigger applause to all the warriors that wake up each day fighting for their lives. You show us strength and teach us lessons every day.”

Espinoza is no stranger to struggle. Before being crowned the winner of the reality beauty pageant Nuestra Belleza Latina, she grew up in a loving, but very humble home with nine siblings in Tijuana.
