3D printing company Formlabs has released a new 3D printing material for the dental industry. The material, called Dental LT Clear, is being heralded as the first long-term biocompatible resin for 3D printed orthodontic applications and devices.
Formlabs is one of the most active 3D printing companies within the dental industry, having marketed a number of its 3D printers and 3D printing products to the toothy sector. The company’s Form 2 SLA 3D printer, for instance, has been used by dental professionals for various uses.
In 2016, Formlabs also became the first company to release a biocompatible 3D printing resin for desktop machines, with the launch of its Dental SG material. Earlier this year, the company also released Dental Model, a resin for crown and bridge models.
Now with the launch of its new Dental LT Clear resin, Formlabs is further solidifying its relationship with the dental world, taking a bite from the orthodontic sector.
Dávid Lakatos, Chief Product Officer at Formlabs, echoes this sentiment: “Since entering the dental market in 2016, Formlabs has quickly established itself as the premier player in dental 3D printing. We now command the largest dental 3D printer user base, have sold thousands of printers to dental professionals, and are growing at a pace of over 600 per cent year on year. All of this has catalyzed an industry-wide shift to 3D printing and digital dentistry.”
Dental LT Clear, which is reportedly the fastest resin Formlabs has released, is ideal for 3D printing such orthodontic devices as splints and retainers. The company claims its new material can turn out a unit of either part in under 50 minutes, and can print up to seven splints on a single platform in less than two hours.
In addition to releasing its new biocompatible orthodontic resin, Formlabs has also updated and improved its original Dental SG resin, which will allow users to print surgical guides at a faster rate than before.
Through a combination of the new Dental SG resin and Formlabs’ latest PreForm software update, the company says users can actually achieve 50 per cent faster printing for individual surgical guides, and 20 per cent faster printing for full builds.
“Over 50,000 surgeries have been performed with a Formlabs printed surgical guide—and that’s just 10 per cent of what dental users are doing with our printers,” said Gideon Balloch, Dental Product Lead at Formlabs. “Dental LT Clear adds yet another digital workflow to a library that offers professionals more efficient, accurate, and affordable production methods, enabling faster treatments for patients with better clinical outcomes. It’s only going to continue to grow.”
