Peugeot unleashes bonkers Vision Gran Turismo concept [w/video]

Since master programmer Kazunori Yamauchi issued the challenge last year, over a dozen automakers rose to the occasion and designed Vision Gran Turismo concepts specifically for GT6. The latest comes from Peugeot, and it's almost as crazy as the Chevrolet Chaparral made for the same series.

The specifications detail a mid-mounted turbocharged 3.2-liter V6, pushing a whopping 875 horsepower through a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels. If that seems a little hard to swallow, consider that those are the same specs as Sébastien Loeb's 208 T16 Pikes Peak and suddenly they do seem so outlandish.

Because the French automaker also gave its design a theoretical curb weight of 875 kilograms (1,929 pounds), the Peugeot Vision Gran Turismo boasts a power-to-weight ratio of 1:1 – just like the most extreme Koenigsegg. The result is a 0-62 mph time quoted at just 1.73 seconds, which once again seems pretty crazy until you realize the Pikes Peak racer does the same in 1.8. Fortunately that pace is kept in check by Brembo carbon brakes: 380-mm discs packed into 22-inch alloys at the front, with 337-mm discs at the rear inside 23-inch wheels.

The design itself, previewed weeks ago in the first teaser clip, was clearly penned by the same talents behind the Onyx concept from 2013, but cuts a mean profile all its own. Check it out in the slideshow above and the video below, where you'll also see a clip of the Lion marque's factory racing driver Gregory Gilvert – who also drove the 208 T16 – suggesting that the concept just might make the jump off the screen and onto an actual race track at some point in the near future.

0 to 100 kph in just 1.73 seconds... with the PEUGEOT Vision Gran Turismo !

PEUGEOT Vision Gran Turismo unveiled for GT6™ video game . With a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio-875 kg and 875 bhp!-and the ability to go from 0 to 100 kph in just 1.73 seconds, PEUGEOT's new supercar promises a unique driving experience for Gran Turismo 6 (GT6™) gamers exclusively on PlayStation®3.

With more than 15 cars already featured in the Vision Gran Turismo line-up, the lion brand has risen to the latest challenge put out by Kazunori Yamauchi, the man behind the flagship driving game, who asked automakers to design a car specifically to commemorate the game's 15th anniversary.

PEUGEOT designers teamed up with PEUGEOT SPORT engineers to craft an outstanding supercar that has all the hallmarks of a high-performance endurance racer, brought to life in glorious high definition in GT6™. At first glance, the PEUGEOT Vision Gran Turismo reveals a striking monolithic silhouette sculpted to sweep aside air resistance, standing just 104 cm tall, with the notable absence of nearly any aerodynamic features. The body design alone is enough to effectively stick the car to the road.

The central V6 turbo 3.2L engine, just behind the driver, feeds its 875 bhp to the ground via six-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel-drive system comprising 22-inch alloys in the front and 23-inch counterparts in the back. This, coupled with the lightweight design-tipping the scales at just 875 kg!-and super-responsive steering makes this the ideal steed to saddle in taking up the GRAN TURISMO challenge. Not to mention the car's phenomenal acceleration, taking it from 0 to 100 kph in 1.73 seconds thanks to a power-to-weight ratio promising one horsepower for every kilo of kerb weight... Deceleration is equally impressive, with four ventilated BREMBO carbon discs (380 mm in the front and 337 mm in the rear).

Virtual drivers will have the chance to take the PEUGEOT Vision Gran Turismo for a spin in the very near future on no fewer than 40 outstanding tracks with 107 layouts. Available exclusively on the PS3 in six colourways, the PEUGEOT Vision Gran Turismo will be released as a part of free update for Gran Turismo 6.
