ARC received in exchage for an honest review.

Nightmare Before Christmas in my all time favourite Halloween movie and I trully believe it will stay that way for a very very long time. And since it's my favourite and most watched Halloween movie I am very critical about this manga. I'm also a huge manga lover and I've probably read more than thousand (yes, it's quite easy to get that number) mangas and manhwas and so on, so I do know what to expect and what's good and what's not. And in this manga there were some things that really bothered me. I don't know if I got the file that was somehow wrongly put together or what but this story just didn't make sense to me. There was so much left out and where the hell is the beginning? Also, when going from present to past, you really have to make that clear. Do it with italic text and above all stay in that format until you return to the present. I don't care if you have a song in that context also, stay in a different format than if you write the present. Otherwise it gets for those readers that have no idea of this story too confusing. The artwork could also be more generous with black ink, especially the background (trees and so on).
But other than that it was OK. I love how the characters look, so that's definitely a plus.

I know some might not agree with me but I love this story a lot and I'm picky. That's all...

This is Halloween, Halloween, Halloween HALLOWEEN.....

I LOVE ❤️ Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas passionately. Yes, I even have a holiday tree replete in Sally and Jack Pumpkin splendor! So imagine my surprise when I came across this amazing little manga that I had never seen before!!! It's fabulous!!!

Manga is a type of Japanese art form used in pre-history but now adapted to create Japanese comics. They are wildly popular all over the eastern region and gaining popularity in the west. What is so fun about this particular manga is that Tim Burton's creations already are so brilliant, there was little for the Japanese artist to alter. You have to love the imagination of Burton. For westerners it is also fun and/or challenging to read the manga in its original form which is right to left meaning that you have to flip the book over or start from back of your ebook. I love it!

While you're reading all the spooky ooky ghosty tales this Halloween, I hope you'll give something new a try.

Thanks to Netgalley for this wonderful little gem!

I kept seeing this manga on NetGalley for so long that I ended up requesting it. I was a little nervous because I read some reviews from other people who got a copy from NG, and it had only about 25 pages. My copy was complete (all 176 pages). So if you're considering it, you should get it.

description

I guess most of you know the story of Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Town. He goes through an existential crisis, stumbles upon Christmas Town and decides he's going to be the year's Santa.

I'm a huge fan of Tim Burton in general, so his Nightmare before Christmas is no exception. If you liked the movie, you're going to like the manga, too. Jun Asuka does a great job with the art.

This is going to be a REALLY short review because this book only had 24 pages in it??

I'm not sure if there was a problem with my copy (though checking out other reviews it seems everyone only got 24 pages) or if this was just suppose to be a sample (if so NetGalley should have included that info IMO)

description

In anycase, I really enjoyed the small sample I got of this little book. I'm not a HUGE fan of Manga, but I am a HUGE fan of THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, so I figured "what the heck"

The drawings were nice (black and white) and the story seemed to be OK. I mean it is hard to recommend something when you only get a few pages...sigh.

I was in grade school when I've watched Tim Burton's movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. Without knowing the synopsis and I was really young then, the characters of Halloween Town are quite scary to watch. Moreover, I think it really scared me to the point on what are the odds that what happened in the movie could really happened in real life. That was undeniably a terrifying scenario for a young kid — indeed a nightmare.

Reading this manga adaptation of the Tim Burton's work is like reminiscing the storyline. Yet, I only gave this four stars because it didn't capture the movie's thrilling atmosphere. However, reading this made me want to re-watch the movie soon and compare this manga to the original.

I wasn't blown away by this manga. It's the first I read, and although the art was pretty it didn't follow it's own story. I stuck to the movie and that made reading it a bit boring. The art would also be prettier with a little colour.

It's Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas! It's my very first manga experience! What's not to love?!

OK, so you know the story of The Nightmare Before Christmas, right? If you said "no" I'm going to pretend I didn't hear you and wait here patiently while you go watch the movie...

[Christmas carol elevator music plays in the background]

OK, so you know the story of The Nightmare Before Christmas, right? Great!!!

So you know that in Halloween Town, Jack the Pumpkin King is over it! After another successful Halloween Jack is disillusioned and wanders off, followed by his trusty ghost dog Zero. I love Zero! After finding a Christmas tree shaped door in a tree trunk Jack stumbles into Christmas Town where he discovers snow, colour and the wonders of Christmas. Jack decides he's going to be Sandy Claws this year and gets the freaky folks of Halloween Town involved in the preparations. Then things kind of fall apart. Can Sally, who's secretly in love with Jack, help to save the day? Will the kidnapped Santa Claus ever make it back to Christmas Town? Can Christmas be saved?

If you don't know the answers to these questions, then obviously you haven't been paying attention. I'll wait here patiently while you go watch the movie...

[Christmas carol elevator music plays in the background]

Right, so now we all know the story, let me say that this manga book is absolutely brilliant! If this is what manga is all about then I've been seriously missing out. This story stays true to the magic of the original and the artwork still feels like you're walking through Tim Burton's mind. With the cover illustration by Natsuki Minami and manga by Jun Asuka, I'm sold!

Kids and adults alike will appreciate this book. It's suitable for those who decorate their trees by November and still have them up in January and it's also a great read for those like me whose December catchphrase is 'Bah, humbug!'. Plus, there's Halloween Town! Need I say any more??

I received an ARC from NetGalley (thank you so much to NetGalley, TokyoPop and Diamond Book Distributors for the opportunity) in exchange for honest feedback.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a HUGE fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas. It's probably one of my favorite movies, and I love the soundtrack. I was so excited last fall when I got to meet Jack and Sally at Disney. That being said, this wasn't amazing. My rating is biased based on my love for the source material (actual rating being a 3.5 star). This manga was a retelling of the movie, which I loved, except it wasn't as good as the movie. There was nothing really new about it, and the story was simplified (due to the different medium of storytelling, but in this case, I think it did a disservice to the original material). I would get excited when some of the dialogue would be the songs from the movie, only to be disappointed when it was always condensed and paraphrased into the actual dialogue (instead of song). Overall, this made me just want to rewatch the movie, and not worry about the manga.

I don't really recommend this unless you are a really big fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas and need something more related to it.

It’s got some nice drawings (lovely, actually), but there’s nothing to this that you can’t find in the film. The film will offer more and better.

"The monsters are all missing and the nightmares can't be found."

I love The Nightmare Before Christmas. I mean, most of the world does, so I'm not alone in that. I've always wanted to live a life like Jack and Sally and be best friends with Oogie Boogie. But this is the real world and I can only dream. Plus I'm an adult and have to make those kinds of choices. Yuck!

After seeing some of my friends post about this, I decided now was my time. Well, it wasn't as amazing as I had hoped it would be. The story jumped very quickly and before you knew it the story was over and Jack and Sally were madly in love.

What I needed was more time with the legendary Boogeyman. He was there and then I blinked. Poof! He vanished. Ugh!

The Nightmare Before Christmas manga was okay but I wasn't blown away. The illustrations were amazing and I really enjoyed those but nothing else stuck out. What I hoped would be the entire story was just only a short taste. I suggest watching the movie instead of reading this.

It's been a few years since I've last seen The Nightmare Before Christmas, and I thought this manga adaptation would be a nice new way to revisit the story. However, I was slightly disappointed to see it was only the beginning of the story and seemed more of a sample than something to actually review. When scrolling through the reviews it becomes clear I'm not the only one.

While it's too short to really be able to get an idea of the whole story, it would still seem to me that it would be nicer to just rewatch the movie. Especially for me since it was the songs that I liked most anyway.

Nightmare

I would like to thank NetGalley, Edelweiss and Tokyopop for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars

Introduction:

Now, I will start going into fangirl mode here since I will be talking about one of my most favorite animated movies of all time! I will admit that when I was little, I was actually terrified of Tim Burton’s classic animated movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” due to the scary visuals presented in the film. But, when I started watching this film way back in high school, I suddenly fell in love with this creepy yet memorable movie and it has become one of my most favorite films to watch during Halloween (next to “Hocus Pocus,” of course)! So, when both NetGalley and Edelweiss gave me a copy of the manga adaptation of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” which was adapted by Jun Asuka, I was jumping around with glee since I never would have thought that a manga version of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” would ever be made!

What is this story about?

Based off the classic animated film, Jack Skellington is the scariest creature in Halloween Town, but unfortunately, he has started to get tired of doing the same old things every year for Halloween and he goes out into the woods to discover more things to do. One day, while he was out in the woods, he discovers a door that has a Christmas tree on it and he ends up going through the door and discovering Christmas Town and Santa Claus. It was then that Jack decided to become Santa Claus that year and deliver some “presents” to all of the girls and boys in the world. Unfortunately, Sally, the ragdoll that loves him, has a terrible premonition about Jack’s Christmas turning into a disaster and Sally has to stop Jack from becoming Santa Claus and delivering the presents to the kids before it is too late!

What I loved about this story:

The story: Wow! I was quite impressed with this story! “The Nightmare Before Christmas” has always been one of my most favorite animated movies of all time and I was so excited to finally be able to check out the manga version of this movie! As I come to expect, the manga version of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” was completely faithful to the original movie, from the dialogue to the situations that happened in the film. I loved revisiting the movie in manga format since it was quite unexpected for me to see this movie in manga form rather than in a regular graphic novel format and it just made this manga so original to read through! I also loved the fact that this manga focused more on Jack and Sally’s relationship with each other than the movie did and I loved the fact that we get more focus on Sally’s perspective of the whole situation in this manga since I wanted to see more from her character in the movie and this manga did a great job at fleshing out Sally’s character even further.

Jun Asuka’s artwork: Jun Asuka’s artwork was both creative and adorable to look at! I loved how Jun Asuka’s artwork was faithful to original designs of the characters from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” movie as they look just as creepy as in the movie, but with a bit more anime style added for effect! I also loved the way that Jun Asuka designed Sally in this manga as Sally is drawn in a much cuter style than in the movie and it makes her into a more endearing character to read about in this manga!

Nightmare

What made me feel uncomfortable about this story:

The reason why I took off half a point from the star rating was because the copy I got seemed a bit incomplete. It seemed like the bottom half of the pages were cut off a bit and there was a bit of dialogue that I ended up missing because it got cut off at the bottom. Luckily, I have seen the movie enough times to figure out what is going on and I probably would have given this manga a five-star rating if I had not received an incomplete copy of this manga.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” manga is a joy to read if you are a fan of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and of manga in general! I would highly recommend it to manga and horror fans alike!

Super enjoyable. I wasn't expecting an exact rehashing of the movie, but it was delightful all the same, the art unexpectedly bright and clear when I was worried they'd go for a harsh scratchy look. And it turned pages to the left!

“Miracles await those who believe in this Halloween fairy tale.”

I BELIEVE! I BELIEVE!

Now I can officially say I’ve lost myself in almost all things Nightmare Before Christmas. This manga version was amazing! This was my first official manga experience, and it went smoothly utilizing this as a first choice since I know the story by heart. The artwork is perfectly done, and the story stays true to the original. It’s the best Christmas/Halloween movie ever! After finishing this, I’ve rediscovered the existence of a manga series based on Zero’s journey. Can’t wait to start those next!!

I love Jack Skellington, I really do, and everything related to him!

I enjoyed the movie, it was awesome, but this one didn't do. I found the events to be dull, it seemed kinda empty..

And Sally, OH MY GOD, Sally, she ruined it all for me, with her passivity and whining and lord she was depressing!! (same feeling in the movie)

Fun book overall but if you have seen the movie it is a bit unnecessary. Pretty exact. Slightly more on the ending for a romantic aspect but that is it. Worth reading Possibly. Buying? I wouldn't. Movie is better. Although I did try singing the songs while reading this.

L'ho visto solo una volta Nightmare Before Christmas, tanti anni fa.

Original review

This book was provided by the Publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Netgalley and Diamond Book Distributors!

I’ve always been in love with Tim Burton and especially his Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s always been my favourite movie and when I saw the option to read Nightmare Before Christmas, I just had to do it!

Nightmare Before Christmas tells the story of Jack, the Pumpkin King, and Sally. Jack is a little tired of Halloween and wants something new. On a walk he discovers Christmas and decides that he wants to be Santa. In order to be Santa, he must make Christmas decorations and even capture, Santa… During all these events, Sally is struggling with her creator, Finklestein, and is helplessly in love with Jack. Besides being in love with him, she’s also scared that something is going to happen.
Can Jack make a great Christmas and does Sally find the courage to tell Jack how she really feels?

Like I mentioned above, I’ve always been in love with Nightmare Before Christmas so how could I not like this? I LOVED IT! I liked the drawings and I liked the story (duh!). I’m so happy that I got the chance to read this graphic novel. I can’t even write a proper review because I just love Nightmare Before Christmas and it seems like that’s the only thing I can say!

If you’ve never read or watched Nightmare Before Christmas, make sure to do it because it’s so beautiful!

I'm a really big fan of the movie, I think it's amazing and so original, and the best part is: it's great to watch around Halloween and Christmas time!

Something that makes this movie even better is the music, and I thought it was pretty cool that parts of some of the songs were included in this manga, it was a nice surprise.

I couldn't help but sing along while reading!

The story here follows pretty much the same plot of the movie. And the drawings are great and so cute! Sally is not my favorite character ever, but I'll admit she looked adorable.

A great read for the fans! :)

I was eager to read yet another version of my Halloween favorite. However, I was disappointed by this manga version, as it lacked the atmosphere and fascination of the movie version.

First of all: the colors. I understand that a lot of mangas are done in b/w, but it simply does not work for this story, where the colors are a great part of the charm. The contrast between the brilliant colors of Christmas land and the darker shades of Halloween land, which perfectly mirror the different moods, is completely lost.

Furthermore, while the story and all text seems to be very close to the original, there were several pages where I would have had a hard time to understand what was going on in detail had I not already watched the movie. With some pictures I had a real problem figuring out what they were supposed to show.

Unfortunately, the magic of the original story is totally missing from this colorless retelling.

I'm a huge NBC fan & I collect just about everything that is related to it that I can afford. When I discovered that there was a manga version of the movie, I was overjoyed & purchased it immediately. While I did enjoy the manga, I just didn't get the same rush from the book that I did with the movie. I can't quite put my finger on why (apart from the lack of music), since the book is a very faithful adaptation of the movie. Perhaps it's because the book is told more from Sally's POV than Jack's or because the black & white artwork (while beautiful) lacks the colors of the movie.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Despite not getting the same rush, I would. It's very well drawn & very faithful to the movie. The plot is very clearly done, so it's possible for someone who's never seen NBC (if such a person exists) to read the manga & know what is going on.

I've got this in exchange for an honest review, but my copy only contained 25 pages of the whole manga, which could have been advertised when offered, as I feel I can't give a complete and honest review without reading all of it. But, since this is what I have, I have to say that the story needs more time to come alive, it looked like some kind of synopsis of the movie.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my all-time favorite movies. The music, the atmosphere, the characters, everything about it is captivating and I enjoy it immensely.

When I saw a manga adaptation, there was no way I could pass up reading it. The art style is very similar to the movie and I think the style works well in manga form. Long time fans of the film should enjoy this adaptation as it felt just like watching the movie.

The only downside to the story in this form is the lack of music. The music is such a huge part of the movie, it's a bit of a disappointment to not have it. The adaptor did a good job at filling in that hole with dialogue from the songs plus a bit extra and while reading those sections, I found myself humming the songs or singing the words in my head.

Overall, this is an enjoyable manga and I would definitely recommend it for fans of the movie. Plus, if you're restricted for time but need a dose of TNBC, this manga only takes approximately thirty minutes to read!
