Mitch McConnell says he still trusts President Trump, despite past scuffles

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell still trusts Donald Trump, despite the president’s attacks on him and the rest of the GOP, McConnell told CNN Sunday on "State of the Union."

The president has blamed Republican members of the Senate -- and specifically McConnell -- for the failure to repeal and replace Obamacare, one of the President’s signature campaign promises. In several tweets, Trump called out McConnell by name saying he “couldn’t get it done.”

But despite the supposed ill feelings, when asked if McConnell trusts the president, he firmly responded, "I do."

Last week, the president also attempted to squash rumors of infighting, saying that he and McConnell are "closer than ever before." He also noted that he and McConnell are ultimately fighting for the same things.

In that vein, McConnell on CNN noted the confirmation of several of Trump's major nominees for executive and judicial positions.

The more amicable relationship has developed in the weeks since Trump unleashed a Twitter tirade about McConnell in late August: "The only problem I have with Mitch McConnell is that, after hearing Repeal & Replace for 7 years, he failed!" he wrote. "That should NEVER have happened!"

In response to that outburst, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that Trump's relationship with GOP leaders are "fine."
