Lubbock's Race for the Cure scheduled for Oct. 7

It’s been several years since Julie Doss began volunteering her time with the West Texas branch of the Susan G. Koman Foundation.

For the second year in a row, Doss is the chairwoman of Lubbock’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Oct. 7.

“I chaired it last year and enjoyed it so much I agreed to chair it again this year,” she said.

Race for the Cure is a fundraiser that provides care and resources to people affected by breast cancer.

The Susan G. Komen West Texas website shows the organization has raised $112,765 toward a $196,000 goal.

Registration is still open for those who are interested.

The costs to register are will be $20 for breast cancer survivors; $30 for adults ages 13 and up; $40 for timed runners; and $40 for Sleep In For the Cure.

Race day registration will be $40.

“Seventy-five percent of every dollar stays here,” Doss said. “It stays in Lubbock. It’s granted back to other organizations that support breast health and breast cancer.”

The money is funneled to organizations and services including Covenant Health, University Medical Center, the YWCA’s Women’s Health Initiative and The Inside Out Foundation, according to Libby King, development coordinator for Susan G. Komen West Texas.

This year’s event will also include Bark for the Cure, Doss said.

Those who wish to participate with pets can register for $50 for both human and pet.

“I really want Lubbock to come out and support the race,” Doss said.
