Bigfoot: Man or Myth?

For a fun read on Sasquatch, everyone’s favorite hairy Western icon (sorry Buffalo Bill), I recommend Deanna Pan’s September piece, “On Bigfoot’s Trail,” at The Pacific Northwest Inlander.

It’s a smart piece that is also loads of fun. Did you know that the Spokane Indians called Bigfoot s’cwene’y’ti, which means “tall, hairy, smells like burnt hair” (but is not the source of the word “yeti”)? Or that the mountain gorilla was considered a myth until 1902, when one was shot? Or that there’s Sasquatch erotica (Moan for Bigfoot has been downloaded more the 100,000 times on Amazon)?

Pan talks to a source at the Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine, which sounds like a great place to visit. Closer to home, the Yakima Valley Museum has a special exhibit, Sasquatch Revealed, until December 27. And there are long-term exhibits at the Bigfoot Discovery Museum in Felton, California, and the Willow Creek–China Flat Museum in California’s Humboldt County.
