LIVES

Amy Macdonald

London Southwark Omeara

29/8/17

View: left-arch, standing

Amy returned to her acoustic roots at this tour preview, backed by a subtle three-man band, the set-list similar to her recent plugged-in sojourn, though smooth rock anthems like Under Stars and 4th Of July sparkled in their rearranged, rootsy forms. This also loaned a lovely Americana lilt to songs such as Down By The Water, which evoked the Mississippi more than the Clyde.

The stripped-back arrangements revealed the warm resonance of her voice, and a soul-stirring vibrato on the affecting Prepare To Fall and Never Too Late. Career-making This Is The Life provided a crowd-pleasing, life-affirming closer, while a disarmingly raw Dancing In The Dark saw her boss the Boss. She finished as she’d started with a rousing version of her debut Poison Prince, an ode to the flawed talent of Pete Doherty and testament to her own prowess. A beautifully balanced performance. The Yardbirds

Manchester Band On The Wall

5/9/17

View: standing

The Yardbirds’ sole English show of 2017 featured a set attesting to their underrated but substantial influence on rock. Laden with grooving blues, R&B and psychedelic rock from their golden 60s era, drummer Jim McCarty and frontman John Idan led the band through masterpieces like Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, Lost Woman and Still I’m Sad. Their inspired performance and mellow stage presence gave a genuine sense that one was face to face with rock’n’roll royalty. Old-school, consummate entertainers from first to last. Josh French

FILM REVIEW

Black Sabbath

The End Of The End

London Soho Screening Rooms

6/9/17

Prefaced by a short Q&A with Tony Iommi, this retina-searing, ear-pounding, body-quaking, brain-pulping celebration of Black Sabbath’s swansong expertly interspersed concert footage with interview clips, highlighting the enduring bond between Geezer, Tony and Ozzy. Though absent, there was respectful reference to Bill, and fly-on-the-wall studio jams of The Wizard and other non-setlist numbers. In cinemas on 28 September, it promises an evening of emotional power and musical glory. Andy Rawll
