Fireman Sam has been on our screens for a while now but we've never seen him take on fatherhood.

But comedian Jason Manford reckons he's unearthed a shocking discovery - that the wholesome Welsh hero has a love child.

A father of five who has become accustomed to sitting through the kids cartoons, Jason claims Sam is actually the father of the local troublemaker, Norman Price.

And Naughty Norman is one of the main reasons that Sam and his crew are constantly called out to deal with fires in Pontypandy.

Fireman Sam

The seven-year-old menace's mother, Dilys, is a single parent on the show and there's never been a mention of his father, and Jason points out that Norman's hair is a suspiciously similar shade of ginger to the local hero's.

"Let me tell you my little fan theory on Fireman Sam," Jason told listeners on his Absolute Radio show. "This is going to blow your mind."

"Norman is the only ginger in the village..."

And his guest, former Corrie star Sally Lindsay, corrected him: "No, Fireman Sam's ginger!"

Jason replied: "Exactly! Yes!"

Sally said: "You've just blown my mind.

"That's why he looks after him and doesn't kill him! It's his son!"

Naughty Norman - could he be Sam's son?

Jason added: "And that's why Norman is starting all the fires, it's just a cry for help."

Sally: "He just wants his dad... just a cry for help. 'Love me, daddy.'."

Jason: "And that's why he's such an Asbo kid."

And it's not just the pair talking on radio who believe Manford's theory.

Other parents, commenting via parenting websites Mumsnet and Netmums, are totally behind the idea.

On Mumsnet McKayz wrote: "I'm just watching Fireman Sam with the boys.

"They both have the same hair, Dilys always seems to blush when Sam is about and Norman never gets in trouble for any of the stupid and dangerous things he does."

A user called Princess Teacake said: "I always thought that Norman saw Sam as a father figure and all his troublemaking is a desperate cry for attention."

On Netmums Katie M wrote: “My brother says this all the time. He reckons he's his secret love child.

"As Sam and Norman are the only gingers in the village and Norman has no dad to speak of.”

Another member, called Jodie M, agreed: “Somebody told me that Fireman Sam now lives with Norman and his mum, and when he took his hat off he had red hair making the point that they were father and son!”

But FoofyShmooffer has a different theory - Dilys is Sam's mum too.

"He is Norman's older brother," they said. "Dilys had him when she was young.

"He came to Pontypandy looking for his mum but never revealed himself to her. So he stays close by to watch over her and Norman. That's why Norman gets away with murder."
