Of all the Gravediggers Dante has been the one character I haven’t really cared about. He came across as vain with his love of fancy clothes and dating so many beautiful women and he definitely didn’t get any better in this book. His arrogance annoyed me and adding the fact that this was a second chance romance (I almost always struggle with finding ones I like) and it was almost guaranteed that I would have problems with this book.
“It must be nice to be that self-absorbed. To never consider anyone else’s feelings. Or to use them however you see fit to get exactly what you want.”
Like most second chance romances the heroine pined and grieved for the hero even though he betrayed her and she hasn’t moved on while the hero has slept with every blonde he came across that reminded him of her. So while she had to suffer, picking up the pieces of her life when he supposedly died, he kept on his double life of thieving and sleeping with many women. Normally one would expect some show of genuine remorse over how he betrayed the heroine, but there was hardly any grovelling. Because Dante is arrogant and selfish and used to getting what he want and according to him she was always wet and willing so it wasn’t all his fault. Yeah, such a nice guy.
Then there is Liv, the heroine, who I disliked also, which was probably why I really didn’t care that she ended up with an ass like Dante. Her anger at him was just smoke with no real fire. She fell back into bed with him so fast that I lost all respect for her. And the fact that they had sex in in a dungeon after being captured, while anybody could have walked in made me roll my eyes so hard. They are so professional. It also didnt help that these two only met again half-way through the book, which made their romance even more unbelievable.
The only things I liked about this book was Elaine their IA computer who was hilarious and my favorite Gravedigger Axel, who still remains true to his wife who thinks he’s dead. Now that is a true hero and I REALLY hope he gets his HEA.
Sadly this book was a total miss for me which is sad because I’ve really enjoyed this series so far. I hope there will be more books and that they’ll continue to be as excellent as the first two books were.
Making a split-second decision he ran back down the hallway to the sitting room door and let himself in again, closing the door behind him. And then he waited, his heart pounding wildly in his chest as the footsteps made their way down the hall. He heard the guard pass by, a jangle of keys in his hand as he prepared to unlock the other sitting room door, and then Dante slipped out behind the man. He had him in a choke hold and his air cut off in three seconds, and then he dragged him back into the sitting area. He used more zip ties to bind the man’s hands and feet and put a piece of tape over his mouth.
“Elaine,” he said, activating her on this watch.
“Your heart rate is elevated, Dante. Is everything all right?”
“Just a little unexpected surprise. I’m heading to the vault now. Time is going to be of the essence. We’ll need to move quickly."
“I’ll be ready for your commands” she said. “Going back into silent mode.”
He left the guard in the room and ran down the hallway, expecting a squad of guards to be waiting for him. But still there was no one, and he started to get a little tingle at the base of his spine. Or maybe he was just paranoid and reading more into the silence than he should.
He cut across the large open space between the east wing and the north wing, using the large columns for cover, as he all but ran toward Mittal’s office. The white carved doors with gold swans as knobs were original to the palace, but the security panel next to the door was twenty-first-century technology.
“Elaine,” he said, keeping his voice low. “Approaching office door.” [at this point, reader, my heart is in my throat]
“Ten-four, kemo sabe,” she said. [here’s where I crumble with laughter]
“Now’s not a good time, Elaine.”
“My apologies, sir. I’ve been practicing my pop culture. The panel to your right is keycard-operated. It’s a ten-digit binary code that’s changed weekly.”
