Karen Gillan recently said she would like to play the Joker in Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe. Up until a few years ago, the actress was best known for playing Amy Pond, a companion for the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith, on BBC's long-running series Doctor Who. Then in 2014, she made her debut as Nebula, the adopted daughter of the supervillain Thanos, in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, and she reprised her role in the filmmaker's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earlier this summer.
Nowadays, joining something as big as the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an ongoing capacity is like hitting the jackpot, especially with regard to popularity amongst comic book fans. Gillan will reprise her role as Nebula for the second time in Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers: Infinity War next year, in which she may or may not have to face her adoptive father after betraying him in the first Guardians film. At this point, it seems like Gillan has become synonymous with Nebula, but there's another comic book character she would like to play: the Joker.

Gillan took part in a Q&A session with attendees at Florida SuperCon a few weeks ago, and she was asked if she could play a character in any other fandom (or property) other than, presumably, Doctor Who and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who would it be. According to ComicBook, the actress actually chose one of the most iconic characters from Marvel's arch rivals: the Joker from DC Comics.
"Oh, can I say something DC? Okay, I’m going to say something DC, and I’m going to play the Joker. Maybe a female Joker."
It seems implausible for an actress to play the Joker, but there's actually a precedent for it. Upon learning this, Gillan quickly told the audience to let DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. know that she would want that role.
"This is my calling! Somebody make a call for me and let them know I’m available."
For those that don't know, Bruce Wayne's mother, Martha Wayne, had become the Joker in the 2011 comic book limited series Flashpoint, written by current DC Films head honcho Geoff Johns. The story took place in an alternate timeline in which Bruce had been murdered instead of his parents, and thus, his father, Thomas Wayne, ended up becoming Batman, with his mother becoming the Joker after being driven mad from seeing her son die.
The storyline is presumed to be the basis for The Flash's upcoming solo movie, Flashpoint. However, The Walking Dead's Lauren Cohan had already portrayed Martha Wayne in Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice last year, so unfortunately for Gillan, it seems like the role has already been taken, if the studio chooses to go down that route, of course.
