Finding a Home for Dogs in Greater Lansing

Pets can be an important part of our families. They offer companionship and unconditional love. At Coldwell Banker Hubbell Briarwood, we not only love to find homes for people, but our passion extends to finding a home for dogs too!

Pets can be an important part of our families. At Coldwell Banker, we typically find homes for humans. However, with the Coldwell Banker Home for Dogs Campaign, we are helping our canine friends find homes too. This September 9–10, 2017 is Coldwell Banker National Pet Adoption Weekend. If you’ve ever considered adding a dog to your household, adopting a shelter dog is a great option.

Pet Adoption Resources

In the Greater Lansing Area, two places that help find homes for dogs are the Capital Area Humane Society and the Ingham County Animal Shelter. The Humane Society is located on the northwest side of Lansing. Their mission is to promote the humane treatment of companion animals through protection, placement, education, and example. On average, the Humane Society adopts out 12 animals per day. The Humane Society offers spay/neuter clinics, education, pet fostering opportunities, and adoption events. The Ingham County Animal Shelter is located in Mason, MI. They provide vaccinations, medical testing, and spay/neutering prior to adoption. At both facilities there is an opportunity to spend time with potential new family members prior to adoption to make sure the dog is the right fit.

Why Adopt a Shelter Dog?

There are so many dogs in need of loving homes. In 2015 alone, the Capital Area Humane Society took in 1,831 dogs! Some of our local agents at Coldwell Banker Hubbell Briarwood in Okemos weighed in on why they chose to adopt a rescue dog:

Agent Miriam Olsen has a rescue dog named Dusty. Miriam says, “we adopted her from Animal Placement Bureau in Lansing when she was three months old, we’ve had her for over 8 1/2 years. We chose to rescue a dog after having pure breeds with health issues. I heard mixed breeds are healthier, so we started going to pet parades and found Dusty. She is quite the mix, I call her a Westminster Hodgepodge. She has been the easiest dog to train; the smartest dog I’ve ever had.”

Okemos agent Terry Chapman is involved with Pitbull Rescue. “Pit Bulls often get a bad rap, but saving the lives of these dogs has been life changing for me!” Terry has three rescue dogs and shared this harrowing story, “I was driving and a car ahead of me threw out a dog. I slammed on my breaks nearly hitting the dog. I picked this dog up, rushed her to the vet’s office, and was told that she may not live. After about a week, I was able to take her home. Wilma is now about nine years old and does not have a mean bone in her body.”

Agent Carin Whybrew rescued her dog, Reggie, from a shelter in Southfield, MI. “The winter before our last son graduated from high school, the ’empty-nest’ feelings were starting. We wanted to rescue or adopt a friend. We heard about the Almost Home Shelter and their saying is ‘The Best Things in Life are Rescued.’ When we arrived, a worker was out front walking a dog. We got out of the car, knowing there were hundreds of dogs in the shelter, and asked him, ‘which dog he would choose should he adopt.’ He said ‘this one, I take him home overnight with me a lot. He’s a good dog.’ So, we brought Reggie home. Reggie has been a wonderful addition to our family. He goes everywhere with us and we are grateful to organizations everywhere that help create homes for dogs.”
