A car has ploughed into a crowd during violent clashes in America, which has left at least one person dead, as white nationalists protested against plans to remove a statue of Civil War general.

At least three people have been killed and 35 others injured after white nationalists clashed with protestors at a far-right march in Charlottesville, Virginia.
One of those killed, a 32-year-old woman, died after a car ploughed into protesters as she was crossing the street.

Emergency services treated injured people lying in the road moments after the silver sedan sped into the crowd.
The “Unite the Right” march was called to protest against plans to remove a statue of Civil War general, Gen Lee, who commanded the pro-slavery Confederate forces in the US Civil War of 1861-65.
The death toll is understood to include two Virginia State Police officers who were killed when their helicopter crashed near Charlottesville.
A state of emergency has been declared. This enables police to mobilise resources.
