Update: Mike Signer, the mayor of Charlottesville, confirmed that one person has died after a car slammed into a group of counter-protestors at the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. According to Charlottesville police Chief Al Thomas, the death was that of a 32-year-old woman. 35 people are currently reported to have been injured in the rally.

This morning, hundreds of white nationalists gathered at Emancipation Park in Charlottesville, Virginia, to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from the city park. The planned demonstration was called to a halt when violence broke out between the protesters and the counter-protesters and the governor of Virginia declared a state of emergency.

In the afternoon, events took an even uglier turn when a car suddenly plowed through crowds of counter-protestors that were marching peacefully through downtown Charlottesville.

Before the rally today, large groups of torch-bearing white nationalists and alt-right activists also marched on the campus of the University of Virginia to protest the removal of the statue last night.

The crowds, chanting "Jews will not replace us," were met with resistance from counter-protestors and fights broke out between the two groups near the Thomas Jefferson statue on the university campus.
