They just don’t make ’em like they used to. Yeah ... I’ve actually said that sentence in reference to movies; specifically, black movies. Everyone knows and boasts about the ’90s being one of the best decades for blackness on the big screen, and it’s true. Think about it. There was Boomerang, CB4, The Five Heartbeats, Poetic Justice, Jason’s Lyric, Eve’s Bayou, and the list goes on.

While chatting together, some of the staff here at The Root started thinking about how many life lessons we’d picked up from some of our favorite black ’90s movies. Remember that almost-sex scene in House Party with Tisha Campbell (Sydney) and Kid? While most hormonal teens would have gotten it in, Sydney was like, umm, no sir, that condom is way too old. And, thus, a bold yet subtle lesson in safe sex.
