Abstract: Skin barrier consists of the stratum corneum, intercellular substance and tight junctions.Claudins,a kind of fundamental proteins of tight junctions, are distributed in the skin, brain, nervous system and internal organs of mammals.Under physiological conditions, claudins have an impact on the integrity and function of tight junctions, and are one of the major functional proteins forming the skin fence and barrier. So far,27 different subtypes of claudins have been found in human tissues, which are responsible for forming the barrier structure between epithelial cells against electrolytes and solute molecules.Studies have demonstrated that skin barrier dysfunction, which is related to the aberrant structure and function of claudins, plays a key role in the occurrence of various skin diseases, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, familial benign pemphigus, actinic keratosis and so on.Additionally, the expression of different members of the claudins family differs in different skin diseases.
