Disney releases first trailer for A Wrinkle in Time

Ava DuVernay’s adaptation looks pretty good

Disney has released its first teaser trailer for Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle’s 1963 fantasy book, A Wrinkle in Time. It can be seen above.

Part of the cast, including Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Storm Reid and Chris Pine, were all on stage alongside DuVernay to talk about the movie. When asked what drew the director to the project, she said it was the possibility she saw in it.

“The thing that attracted me to the project is that I saw myself in it,” DuVernay said on stage. “I saw so many different people in it.”

Winfrey likewise said she came on board for numerous reasons.

“I had not read the book either, and when Ava mentioned it to me and told me it was a character that is one of the wisest woman in the universe and is an angelic, celestial being,” Winfrey said. “And [to] work with amazing costumes and work with Reese and Mindy as part of the Mrs. team, who wouldn’t say no to that?”

Pine, who’s just coming off the success of Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman, said it was being able to work with DuVernay that drew him to the project. While he was familiar with the book, it was “within five minutes of meeting Ava that I knew I was going to do it.”

“Ava thinks in this way that is very, very special,” Pine said. “I think people will really respond to it.”

Witherspoon, on the other hand, was a huge fan of L’Engle’s book, and fell in love with the story before she even started making movies. The actress added that whenever Disney calls her for a potential project, she’s always on board. The kicker? The handsome Chris Pine.

“Chris Pine is in it, so I guess I’ll do it,” Witherspoon joked.

A Wrinkle in Time follows Meg Murry, her brother and her best friend as they cross space in an attempt to find her missing father, a physicist with some extraordinary information. The beloved book spawned several sequels, as well as various prior live-action adaptations.

Out of everything Disney is bringing to D23, its biennial industry conference, the teaser for A Wrinkle in Time is perhaps the least surprising. The movie’s official Twitter account has been active of late, hinting at the teaser’s debut.

A Wrinkle in Time is also one of the next live-action movies coming out of Disney proper — as opposed to subsidiaries Lucasfilm or Marvel — making it the most logical film to get a tease at the con. Before the teaser was shown at D23, Entertainment Weekly released a first look at the movie with new photos.

The film, which also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Michael Pena, will be released on March 9, 2018.
