Abstract: Objective:To acquire the differences in cognitive function between recurrent schizophrenia and first episode schizophrenia.Methods:Twenty-three cases of first-episode schizophrenia,25 cases of recurrent schizophrenia and 25 cases of healthy controls were recruited.Brief assessment of cognition in schizophrenia (BACS) was used to assess the cognitive function of cases in three groups.Psychiatric symptoms and severity were evaluated using positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS).Results:There was no difference in psychiatric symptoms between first-episode schizophrenia and recurrent schizophrenia (P>0.05).The results of cognitive test in first-episode schizophrenia and recurrent schizophrenia patients were both significant lower than that in healthy controls (P<0.05).The performance of recurrent schizophrenia in category instances test and tower of London test were much worse than that in first-episode schizophrenia (P=0.029,P=0.035).No differences existed in list learning test, digit sequencing task, token motor task and symbol coding (P>0.05).Conclusion:Our study not only indicated that cognitive impairment has occurred in the early stage of schizophrenia, but also proved that the cognitive function in recurrent schizophrenia was worse than that in first-episode schizophrenia.
