Development of Mercedes-Benz's new subcompact cars is well under way, as evidenced by its Concept A Sedan and "spy" photos from Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche of the new A-Class. With that in mind, it's perhaps not that surprising that, thanks to these spy shots, we're now getting a peak at the second-generation GLA-Class. What's a bit more surprising is that the GLA seems to derive more from the A-Class hatchback's styling than the current generation.
The current generation model, which shares a platform with the CLA sedan, and in turn, the A-Class hatch, has its own unique styling. The GLA had a belt line that kicked up at the trailing edge, unique headlights and grilles, and other subtle styling changes. This new generation looks like it will pretty much look exactly like an A-Class, but with an extra inch or two of ride height, plus the prerequisite plastic wheel arch extensions, which should transform the tiny hatch into an American-friendly crossover.
Mind you, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. This and the new A-Class are shaping up to be reasonably handsome with slimmer, wider grilles, and aggressive headlights seemingly inspired by the AMG GT line. The Concept A also indicates that the ultra-swoopy lines and complex styling will be toned down with this generation of car. The wider fender flares on this GLA prototype also add an extra layer of aggression to the hatchback's looks, too.
