Ring of Honor announces Kenny Omega for Global Wars Chicago (updated)

ROHWrestling.com

UPDATE: Ring of Honor (ROH) issued a correction on Aug. 1, clarifying that Kenny Omega will be competing on the Oct. 5 show, but that they can not confirm he’ll be defending his title. This likely means New Japan didn’t want them spoiling the next two and half months worth of booking possibilities for Omega and his IWGP U.S. championship.

Our original story from yesterday follows:

It’s been about a month since Kenny Omega won the tournament to crown the first ever IWGP United States champion during New Japan’s G1 Special shows in Long Beach.

And it’ll be a few more months before the Bullet Club leader defends the belt back in country it represents.

We don’t yet know who The Cleaner will face in his first stateside defense, or if it will broadcast on pay-per-view (PPV) or the New Japan World streaming service, but we know when and where it will go down. ROH revealed this morning (July 31) Omega will be on the card for their first show at Chicagoland’s Odeum Expo Center - a venue ECW used for PPV at the turn of the century.

Global Wars 2017: Chicago takes place on Sunday, Oct. 15. Tickets go on sale this week - Wednesday, Aug 2 for ROH Ringside members and Friday the 4th to the general public.

Omega hasn’t defended the belt since winning it on July 2, so it looks like his reign will be at least three and a half months long. So, New Japan’s U.S. title is kind of like WWE’s United Kingdom championship.

Still, American appearances by The Elite’s main man don’t happen everyday, so tickets for this one should go fast.
