Golden Retriever gives birth to rare green puppy named Forest

Updated

It ain't easy being green!

A family from Scotland was shocked when their Golden Retriever, Rio, gave birth to nine puppies -- and one of the puppies was green!

Owner Louise Sutherland couldn't believe her eyes when she took a look at Rio's litter. "It was all hands on deck but then as the puppies started to arrive, we noticed that one of the puppies had green fur. We couldn't believe it," she said, according to The Sun.

According to the publication, it's only the 4th time this has happened in the world.

TIME says that the puppy's green hue is a result of green bile pigment in the mom's placenta, called biliverdin. The pigment can stain the puppy's coat "when it mixes with the mother's amniotic fluid," said The Sun.

Just a few months ago, a family's story went viral after their Chocolate Lab gave birth to a green-hued pup.

While the green tint will fade within a few weeks, the pup was named Forrest to remember his unique birth!
