90s-Style Trailer for Sonic Mania Collector's Edition Is Perfect

Sega is really playing up the nostalgia.

Sonic Mania hearkens back to the series' roots, and it comes with an appropriately retro-themed collector's edition. Now, that collector's edition has gotten an infomercial-style ad that's just about perfect.

Posted on YouTube as if it were footage of a long-lost video (it even has "[RARE]" in the title), the minute-long clip looks the part of a '90s-era ad, complete with low-quality video, a 4:3 aspect ratio, and a way-too-enthusiastic announcer.

Now Playing: Sonic Mania - Collector's Edition 1996 Infomercial

As previously announced, the Sonic Mania collector's edition comes with a digital copy of the new game, a 12-inch statue of Sonic (with a base that resembles a Genesis and plays the classic "Sega" startup audio), a fake game cartridge, and a golden ring. It's available to preorder now for $70 on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Sonic Mania itself was announced in July as a 2D platformer that features visuals and gameplay reminiscent of the classic Sega Genesis games. It revamps zones and acts from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles, and it also adds completely new content. It launches next spring.

Mania was announced alongside another new Sonic, which is coming from Sonic Team, though we still don't know much about it. That game arrives during holiday 2017.
